fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Ledger
Against my better judgement, I died on a Thursday. There was no fuss about it; one moment I was looking across the sea, there was a blackness, then I was eternal. I barely even noticed. It was a beautiful scene though - me standing there bundled in my winter jacket, clutching my little black book, looking out over the endless expanse of water and ice. The book had been my travel companion up until here. Where “here” was I wasn’t entirely sure, somewhere in the north Atlantic, hundreds of miles from shore.

Shadow Beats
The day was playing out like any other, with the chilly December morning delivering all of its customary weather to the citizens of New York. Damion Ricci, a young man of thirty years, looked past the dark foyer and to the small octagonal window on the right of his front door. He released a heavy sigh as he saw delicate snow flakes tumble past the window pane and nosedive into the cedar bushes below. He hated the cold, always had. Even as a kid he opted to stay inside with his mother anytime the air dropped below fifty degrees. Todays weather was especially irritating as Damion thought on all the work that was waiting for him at the office. Just days before, as he was heading home for the weekend he might add, his boss had pulled him aside and asked him to direct a project organizing designs for several of the company's social media platforms. According to his higher ups, fashion was changing with the season and therefore the social media accounts had to follow. Not that it was going to be a lot of work. In fact, Damion found it all rather easy after being in the business for close to a decade. No, the amount of work wasn't what bothered him. What really bothered him was the repetitiveness of it all. Damion, as much as he appreciated having such a well paying job and the comfortable life it afforded him, often found himself dreaming about what sort of challenges and rewards he might experience if he just had the courage to get away from his everyday cycle of plopping himself down into his office chair and filing the same boring documents, making the same boring conversation with his co-workers, and reporting the same boring overview of the days progress to his boss. God, it would be so freeing to get away from it all. He just knew it would be.

Where Darkness Sleeps
The Little Black Book... An immersion of darkness hovers in a room, engulfing all except the gold encrusted lettering on a small black book on a table. The room expands to allow the moonlight to trickle its way into the room. The room slowly fades back to lighten the darkness to a mere gray illuminating a grisly scene.

The Golden Ticket
She couldn’t believe it. She had spent the last of her paycheck on enough bread, meat and cheese for the week and had $2 remaining. She was feeling lucky, or maybe desperate, so she scanned the store for the lottery machine. The green machine sparkled with hundreds of tiny lights, attracting its prey to take a chance on winning a jackpot. She stopped on one of the five options, the one promising a “$20,000 Golden Ticket” to one lucky winner. The ticket was gold and shiny, it was calling her name. Without a second thought, she pushed the button and grabbed her ticket. She grabbed her stuff and walked the 10 blocks back to her apartment.

Dinner Is At Five
Martha grew up in a very small town. Most people would think they knew but would never really understand how small it really was. Mason, Alabama, was so small that its name wasn’t even known to the other towns around. It had been lost in the growth of the state, from a mostly rural area to a more urban one. The town still had a sign announcing where it started and where it ended, but for the most part, no one knew it even existed. It was just presumed to be a small backroad area of Montgomery.

The Devil's Playground
It was a chilly, bright, moonlit night. I did not want to be out tonight, but when Gloria, the girl you have secretly loved for years, begs you to come, you could not say no. We trekked through the woods on the same beaten path that we have always used. Although we have been through this trail a million times, there was something eerie about it tonight. A fog started to settle in, and even though the night was bright, the darkness felt darker beyond what you can see.

The Book of Slender Man
Ten year old Jaxon and best friend Tanner ripped down the trail on their bicycles through the woods behind their neighborhood. The boys vaulted over jumps, slid around corners, zipped down narrow paths and raced across shortcuts they knew by heart. They were on their way to the convenience store on the far side of the wooded acres.

Chicken Wing
Ruby’s beady black eyes followed Heidi’s every move as she gingerly patted the dusty shelf overhead. Goosebumps tickled her neck as the sticky cobwebs clung to her fingers. Resisting the urge to run out of the musty chicken coop she tiptoed to reach higher. She took a quick peek at the hen on the perch, unnerved at the hen’s statue-like stillness. Heidi shuffled a little farther into the dimness as the glittery eyes followed her. She needed to find that little black book! The hen silently watched. Heidi knew it was irrational, but she was afraid to turn her back on the old biddy. Swallowing down her anxiety she again hastily patted the shelf. Metal clanged as her fingers painfully rammed a metal box. Ruby’s wings fluttered behind her which spurred her to snatch the box and sprint out the door with squeal.
