BLACK SOUL
The sea was wet. The sea was silent. The sea was as flat as a plate of piss and almost as yellow from the scorching sun staring down at the tiny dinghy I was lying in, dying in, thirsting for a glass of water. The only time any movement occurred on the sea was when I changed positions. As the dinghy rocked, the hungry waves' watery lips slurped, sucked and licked their way along the keel as if awaiting a feast and I was the main course. Salt water sloshed, slid and slithered inside the bottom of the boat like a slinking snake caught in the open with no where to hide. My eyes burned, my skin burned, and my mind burned.

The Oak Tree To Somewhere Else
I was cruising just outside of Livermore when I spotted a bright neon sign. It was shaped like a giant cowboy boot and its bright letters it proclaimed the magic word … “Open”. Strangely enough, I’d passed by here before and never noticed the rundown building holding up the sign, but it did appear to be a bar. I was thirsty and this looked like the kind of place that might attract the type of person I was looking for. My goal was to meet up with someone I could pump for a few ghostly tales of the California wine county that I could use on my blog.

The Scarlet Haired Maiden
“Never look in her eyes,” he said. “Look to the horizon and concentrate on the ship. Her charms are many and all-powerful, but you have to be strong. You have to look to the ship on the horizon. It always appears when she's here, and it may be your only saviour. She can’t look there or stand between you and the ship and will do all she can to make you look her way

Stranded at Sea
My mind is foggy. Adrenaline is pumping, and my ears are ringing; my throat is full and choking. Of what? Bitter, burning, salty ocean water. Why? I'm struggling to stay afloat in the Atlantic Ocean, far from any civilization. That's right; it's coming back to me. I fell overboard! From where? My cruise ship. I was on a trip to visit the Caribbean for a well-deserved vacation. I was so excited; I'd never been on an exotic trip before. It was a massive win at the grocery store in a drawing, of which I never won anything. I dashed home and began packing shortly afterward. The ship would leave first thing in the morning.

A Warning at Sea
The water had gotten warmer since Sam first started floating in it, clinging to a piece of wreckage. He awoke with brief memory of how he had arrived at this point. Looking around, he saw nothing but open water. How did I get here? Where is everyone else? Is this how I’ll die? These thoughts ran wildly through his head, and then he passed out floating on a broken piece of the ships hull. A few hours later, he awoke in a bed with another man starting down at him. Sam sat up startled, as he did not know how he had gotten out of the water.

Time and Tide Do Not Wait
Jon Stevens hadn’t seen a living person in weeks, and he preferred it that way since just about every one of those so-called human beings had tried to kill him for either his meager belongings or for food. Not that he often carried food because it was hard to come by even when he was looking for it – but rather these two-footed beasts considered him to be a convenient source of nourishment. Small animals had become nearly non-existent, at least where people were trying to survive. Big game like deer and bear had moved deeper into wooded areas that were much harder for the hungry few to navigate. Human beings were now food for each other. No one in Jon’s neighborhood saw this coming – the power outage eleven months ago that everyone thought would last a few hours and turned out to be permanent. Now people were eating each other. “How the hell does this happen?” Jon mused to himself walking carefully among the trees along what used to be Interstate 79 North.

Nummy Calvin
You’ve seen me around town, you just pretend not to. I’m the guy crawling out of the dumpster behind downtown restaurants to ask for a handout. The guy who smells like he pissed himself and always seems to have snot running out of his nose. I hear your kids when they insult me, the name they call me … Nummy Calvin. I don’t know why they call me that, it’s not even my name. But I don’t care, I have more important things on my mind than fighting with a bunch of punks. I have to get my revenge on the bitch who did this to me.

The Drownding Dream
The boy took in the salty air as he leaned on the edges of the ship. The sails caught the wind high above him, making the sound of faint clinking. As he hummed under his breath, a song that was heard by the sea many times. He heard the crew yelling and rushing around but paid no attention to it; he was the captain's son. As he let the warm sunlight hit his golden skin and the salty air rustle his dark brown coils. He let his hands rest on the old wood of the ship’s side, excitement getting to him as if they were going somewhere; they weren't; they were just out for a joy boat ride on the willing sea that took them places far and near. Today though the sea only took them a few yards out.
