The Crow's Nest
(Excerpts from the journal of William Goodsir, the only crew member found on The Artemis) 19th of May 1806 It’s been three days since the mutiny aboard the Artemis, but our fortune is no better than under the short-lived leadership of Captain Dontez. After Captain Zissou died during the storm just over a fortnight ago, Dontez naturally took his place being the first mate. However, days later as the winds stopped and the sea grew as still as death, Samael began to speak of a Jonah aboard. He began in general whispers amongst the crew as we worked at first. Few of the men gave his claim much merit, but as the days went on without the winds return, they began to listen. He marked Dontez as the Jonah, making accusations against him of murder to improve his rank. I, who have sailed under Dontez since the turn of the century, couldn’t believe it. He had always been an honorable man, and never had I met such a devout God-fearing man out at sea. Regardless, even the most skeptical of the crew began to come around to Samael’s line of thinking as the days turned to weeks and the winds had yet to return. Of the twenty-four able bodied seamen aboard, he had the support of all but three, Magnus, Paul, and myself. He also had the support of the carpenter Hickey and cook Crozier as well leaving few left to support Dontez. Those of us who did simply stayed out the way the day Samael took over the ship, Dontez was asleep when Crozier cut his throat, as was the second mate. Dontez’s first mate Edgar was on watch when they came for him, he was stabbed in the back then thrown overboard by the seaman on duty. After all was done Samael gathered everyone on deck to announce his appointment as Captain to the cheers of most of the men. Now three days after, still with no wind in our sails, as well as the men going through what’s left of our food and spirits with no regard to rations, I fear this may only be the beginning of our sorrows. Therefore, I have set about making a record of events to ensure an account of things so should we not make it back to port, any whom may find this will know the truth of our fate.

Stone Unturned: DAN
The bright lights of the ER were almost blinding to Dan. The pain he suffered during the fall had somewhat subsided and even the slight headache had lessen in its intensity. His phone was completely dead and he hadn't had a chance to call Fancy.

Old Man Viking Vs. The Kraken
My grandfather tells me many stories when I visit him, tales of Vikings and forgotten legends. Some of them are funny, like how Loki once tricked Thor into attempting to lift the Midgard Serpent, a gargantuan beast that encircles the entire Earth and bites its own tail (keeping the planet in balance and held together), which he had disguised as a kitten. One of the most interesting tales is the story of Odin and his two ravens, Huginn and Munnin, that would circle the Earth and report back to him every day.

Alone on the Ocean
Entry One 14/06/1719 A castaway, I have been adrift, no oars, no navigation, just some rations and the endless ocean for two days. My ship sank and my fellow crewmen are presumably dead. When we fell under attack, I had readied a lifeboat and what rations I could. As everyone was preparing to abandon ship, a cannonball struck our mast which toppled and forced the lifeboat I was in to fall. When my small boat struck the water, the oars flew out and became lost to me. While the pirates murdered my crewmen, raided and sunk our ship, I drifted away...silently.

The Woman Adrift
The storm hit Falcon-88 out of nowhere. It was unlike anything Shauna had seen before. Rain tore through the darkened sky like bullets, drumming against the seasoned shrimp boat. Every beat seemed to give off a deep sense of nervous resonance that vibrated throughout both the boat and the crew. A thick and milky fog covered the top of the ocean water as they sailed blindly through the night.

The Whaler's Fear
A man sits up, eyes bloodshot and sunken. The smell of sweat and alcohol hangs heavy in the air. Sunrays come in through the window, unassured if that means safety or despair. The cool black sky of night looms heavy on the soul, but the bright light of day is a good way to see something you don't want to. The man stares blankly forward recalling the dream he had just burst up from. He remembers a ship, a ship sailing east, going towards the horizon. Then, a rendition of something mad, something horrific, an amalgam from below that had ripped the boat under. No matter how much drink, how much cocaine, it was still vivid and he was still tired. It had been days, maybe even a few weeks of this torment. He lays back down, running his hands through matted hair. All he could do was hope it never showed back up.

The Cursed Tomato
It was a very beautiful day in the farm, the sun was shining but it was not a hot day. You could feel the nice morning mist and you could only hear the animals making their wake-up calls. The Heirloom Tomato field was especially beautiful and there was one tomato that stands out. If tomatoes could think, I bet he would want to be like that forever, to be left alone, but that would mean the end of days. Maybe that’s what I want, maybe that’s what humanity wants, the end. So, I touched the tomato and whispered to it, “You will always be beautiful and ripe, you will never rot. Whatever is done to you, the same will be done to the perpetrator, he who cuts you will get cut, he who eats you will get eaten and so on. No matter what is done to you, you’ll end up beautiful and ripe.” I step back and watch, this should be fun.

In the lake
It was a dead-quiet weekday night, and I was safely tucked in my single- room dorm bed, scrolling through my phone. A while before, I shut all the lights off, only to leave the flame-colored desk lamp as the only source of light in the room. It was a comfortable setting after a day of hard work and a busy college schedule. The phone screen shone bright directly into my face while I checked the last late night posts on my social media feed before bed. Suddenly, the door to my balcony flung wide open, sending the curtains reeling uncontrollably into the room. My heart thundered inside my chest as I stared, frightened, at the gaping space between the inside of the room and the outside. Nothing had alerted me of a brewing storm in the middle of spring; nor had my weather app. I posed the phone on the nightstand and reluctantly got out of bed.

Something Lurks Beneath
She spread her toes in the white sand, feeling the heat run up her legs. She loved to just lay there in the sun, soaking up the heat as a lizard would. She remembered laying in the sun with her little brother in the backyard in the summer. He would always burn no matter how much sunscreen they would put on him.
