Two Brothers
Most towns used promontory points for prime make-out locations, but we had an island a short distance away, easily accessible by dinghy and, with our proximity to the ocean, most kids grew up knowing how to captain one anyway. Personally, I've always thought that other towns were missing out. You can't get more secluded than an island with an old lookout tower that's more wooden reinforcements than the original stonework.

Last Night at Luster's
Arctic Monkey's, "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High," was faintly registering in the back of my mind, and I felt like I was underwater because of the zoned-out state I was in. I probably should not have been fixating on the dance floor where we met because I could see his brown eyes and tousled dark hair as if he were there. It definitely didn't help that I was on my third Dirty Shirley. There was no way I was enjoying Luster's shitty bonafide hole-in-the-wall, yet somewhat charming atmosphere tonight. Usually, my roommate and I would be able to walk into our favorite bar in Pacific Beach, and once the overwhelming smell of sweat and saltwater faded away, pure bliss would encompass us. Turns out ending my situationship with Bobby actually hurt a lot ... maybe because he was the only one I ever had real feelings for. Oh no, I was spiraling.

Several sailors sat around a table nailed to the floor, keeping the lantern steady as an older man continued the telling of stories. His gray beard was encrusted with salt from years of sailing. His gruff voice spoke with a certain authority to the lesser experienced seamen who avidly awaited to hear what he had to say.

I’d go even as far to say that it might be dangerously hot…life threateningly so. Perhaps it’s like an ocean of fire blazing a trail across her psyche, destroying everything in its path. Everything it touches.
