fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Prescott Partings & Company
It was a wet, late autumn and matted leaves coloured brown, yellow and red were raked in ovals larger than the shrubs in their thickets lining the front of the cemetery yard. In the morgue’s embalming room below its chapel, parlour, down a spiral flight into the basement on a cold, clear and dreary evening the funeral home’s mortician had begun the process, draining substance of red from the veins, forcing one in and the other out. The removed articles of clothing, in a bungle on the floor and stained with the essence of final substances released yellow and brown, he rolled into a ball and threw in the trash.

Edwin’s Book
When I was a child my father took a new position in his firm. It was a promotion of sorts and brought him more money but the consequences were that my younger brother and I were moved hundreds of miles north of where we had both been born, where all our friends were, where everything we knew was. I think it was a little harder for me, I was eight, David, my younger brother was only 5 and had been in school for a lot less time than I had. I’d got my friendship groups and in the blink of an eye it was gone.

Cold night
My name is Alex, a little girl of 6 years of very small size and this size was a great help to me, as I could hide in the narrowest or smallest places from my father's tantrums and violence, especially after drunkenness and that I would not find anyone to defend me if I fell under his hands.

Worth It
Her scent permeates the air: I can practically taste peaches coming off her tousled, honey hair, still wet from a shower. Her creamy, caramel skin is aglow, fully hydrated from what I assume was vanilla scented body lotion. I catch a faint whiff of hazelnut coffee out of her rosy lips as she gives out a slow exhale. I casually glance up past her lips to the rest of her face; her eyes are closed, and one of her delicate fingers reaches up to move a strand of hair and tuck it behind a petite ear. She has her earbuds in and is unaware of my attention. Her eyes slowly open, and I see that dark, chestnut brown with a hint of minty green before I look away to avoid her gaze. My eyes focus heavily on the advertisement above her head: “L’Oreal…Because You’re Worth It” accompanied by a woman whose looks are but a dull sedimentary stone compared to the gem next to me. “Worth it, indeed”, I quietly muse to myself.

Cupcakes
“Do you like cupcakes? Of course, you do; everyone likes cupcakes. How could you not? Just like women, they’re beautiful to look at, and they taste great. The first thing you notice is the delicate frosting on top. There’s an abundance of possibilities! The icing can be frosty as an icicle or warm like a sunset. The colors can swirl and dance with each other or can make a bold statement with a strong but solid, singular color. It can thinly cover the exterior or tower over the soft cake underneath. Flavors can be mellow and sweet, like a gentle maiden with a graceful smile in a meadow full of pastel-pink petunias. They can be rich and overpowering, a queen clad in black with onyx jewels upon her crown. They can be as subtle and refreshing as a golden smile hidden behind golden locks. You can crush that sweet innocence with your powerful jaws for that delicious release. Or sometimes, they are even spicy with a kick of paprika or cayenne, a dancer from distant lands with piercing eyes of fire as she sways her hips to the beat of your quickened pulse. You get that adrenaline rush like a knife to the throat. There can be designs like a fresh flower or an adorable bumble bee, or additional toppings such as chocolate chips or some sour rainbow gummies: just like a woman can have a pierced septum, or a tattoo of a dove flying away across her collarbone.

Smokeless Fire
Each night Jane awakes to the smell of fire. She can hardly remember a single instance, but each time Jane is confronted with the familiarity of it. At first, she thinks she’s dreaming it. Then she thinks it a recurring dream. But over time the dark circles form around her eyes and deepen beyond her, or anyone else’s, denial—like growing pools of ink in small bowls, that surround confused corneas floating in the center, tired, and afraid.

Midnight ghost
Why are the souls of the dead groaning and their ghosts hovering in that dark and loathsome place in which they were killed and tortured in brutal and cruel ways? Their limbs are stiffened, their parts cut off like chickens, and they are slaughtered in the end like ewes, and they sacrifice them. Do they want to say that they are human beings? This is not the way they should ever die. They are not animals.

CHRISTMAS AT NANA'S
Christmas dinner was finally ready, and Nana called the family to the table. The presents had been opened; fragments of wrapping paper had already lodged themselves into the sofa cushions and underneath the coffee table. Any initial excitement of the day had long since waned, and the family had retreated to its regular routine. But now it was time to eat and go home.

Please secure your doors.
I'm not sure if he was a stalker or if it was a strange break-in. So I was terrified from the start that I would fail this one class and hence not be able to get my AA degree. Later that day, I was in my apartment complex's pool with other friends and roommates when I checked my phone and discovered that I had passed my class. I became overjoyed and informed everyone that we were celebrating since I was the last one to have a final. I felt we should have some fun before we all went our separate ways three days before I got to walk and graduate with this degree. We opted not to go out as the night progressed and instead stayed in. We invited a few more folks over and carried on with the night. Around 2 a.m., people began to depart and went to bed, leaving just my two roommates, both of whom were dating, and one other buddy.

My Apartment
After binge watching zombie movies, I got ready for bed. I took a refreshing shower, brushed my teeth and put on my plain blue pajamas. The zombies, fresh in my mind, made me laugh at the absurdity of how slow and non-threatening they usually are. "How are they a threat when they can't even run," I thought to myself, "I prefer the ones where they can run and sort of strategize." I climbed into bed, loving the cool sheets, while positioning my pillows. It didn't take long for me to fall asleep.

Finding the Right Match
To move for the first time was a wondrous occasion for me. What started out as a simple idea developed into something nobody could have ever imagined was possible. So many failed attempts and finally, the achievement everyone had been hoping for finally took place. I could transport, depart, and stimulate. I could think. I could do it all, but I wasn’t complete. Not yet. I had everything going for me, except I could not find a match.
