Your Turn
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Over the years, the cabin had been home to squatters, one-night-staying hikers, a raccoon or several, and the like. Locals had said that the cabin had been largely unoccupied since the family that inhabited it had suddenly disappeared in the early 20th century. Versions of the tale blamed consumption, starvation, murder, and even a mysterious curse. The truth, as it often is, was much worse.

Madman Muck
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Jake could just make out the old cabin’s silhouette in the dark, trekking with his eye up the slope a little from the tilted maw of a dilapidated boat house. It was the only feature on the coast of the small, peaked island across the lake from his family's cottage. Jake looked out towards the missing door of that boathouse most nights, while he followed his golden retriever, Buckley, around on the shoreline to ensure he did his nighttime business.

The Word
“The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window.” It was a small cabin, rotting brown, dusty, very old and falling apart. There were holes in the roof, cobwebs everywhere, and evidence of creatures prowling through it. There was even a root poking out of the dirt floor. It smelled of dust, rot, and creatures. It was largely a part of the woods now, turned wild. In fact, inside the cabin there was little evidence that humans had ever even lived there: a broken chair, a table with three legs, and a lit candle was all that remained. There was nothing special about it, except there was a curious something written above the front door, almost completely faded. Suddenly, the front door screeched open, and a man walked out.

A Light In The Dark
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. We saw the illumination through a gap in the trees, and the three of us froze. In the sudden hush, I became aware of the proliferation of sounds in the surrounding dark; the heavy, damp air was alive with the stridulations of crickets, the calls of frogs, and the barest susurration of wind. A rabbit screamed in the distance.

The Cabin in the Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Justin was the first to notice the dull, yellow flicker that created a bokeh effect on the cabin’s cold misty glass panes. Reflexively, he raised his right arm and pointed, directing Ana’s attention to what he had just seen. Ana froze. “But…but Wade said no one else lived out here,” she stammered. Justin could already feel the tingly feeling running down his spine. It was fear, but not just that. It was something more. It was a rush of excitement; of daring. He knew what he was going to do, and he also knew the rest of the group was going to be against it. There were six of them out here; all twenty-somethings. Dominic and Jojo were seniors at the college across town. But they were also dating, having met in math class two years prior when they were sophomores. Justin had been accepted by an ivy-league college out of town, but had decided against taking up the offer in favor of a fledging music career. He was also attracted to Ana; a sweet, shy and wide-eyed girl who he had met at the town’s music festival earlier in the year. He had convinced her to come on this trip with him and his friends. He had promised to “show her a good time.”

Darkness Inside
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. With little thought I walked through the decrepit trees toward the glow. My mind hopeful my throat dry my body containing the madness inside. How long have I waited for this moment? Stumbling over the jagged rocks and beaten down trees I reached the clearing.
