fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Foster Family
Thirteen year old Jessie didn’t look back as they drove away from the house where she had lived for the past seven years. Living with her abusive stepfather, it had never felt like a home, and now that she was leaving all she felt was relief. This time he’d gone too far. Her mother was in a coma in the local hospital and it wasn’t known if she would wake up. For now, he was being charged with attempted manslaughter but that could change depending on the outcome. She didn’t care what happened to him. Her heart squeezed when she thought of her mother and a single tear rolled down her face; but hadn’t she allowed that man into their lives? She had invited him in and allowed him to behave the way he did. She was supposed to protect her child and she allowed it to happen. The bitterness and blame was too strong and, as sad as it made her, she couldn’t forgive her mother for exposing her to that evil man and everything she had endured in the last seven years.

A Stranger in Kentucky
The hazy winter sky of Winston blushed, as the sun set. Winston was a small unincorporated community smack-dab in the middle of Kentucky, where nothing much happened at all. Decrepit farms littered the margins, and at the town’s center stood a baptist church, with a cemetery in the back. There was also a gas station, a small grocery store, and a burger joint. If you needed something else, you had to go to Lexington.

The Price of Knowledge
To truly understand what drove the design behind that feckless abomination, I dove headlong into most ancient and forbidden tomes. Within the books, covers wrought with withered flesh and sinister insanities scribed in bileous blood, I stumbled upon the means to divine the location of a ritual site that would illuminate the hideous, shadowy truths brooding away in places best forgotten by the release of death.

Trapped in the Where
Awakening Ever so slowly, eyes open to the dark room. Momentary confusion is overtaken by hunger. Covers are thrown aside and legs swing around until feet touch the floor. One unsteady yawn and a labored effort has them standing upright. A few steps are taken and then a sudden halt.

The House Guests
Stepping over tree roots and pushing branches out of her way, Claudia hollered over her shoulder, “It’s just a little further, guys!” “You’ve said that 10 times now.” A voice called back, slightly irritated. She looked back at Jason and Olivia stumbling behind her as they tried to keep up without falling flat on their faces. “It’s going to be worth it, trust me.” “You said that already, too,” mumbled Jason. The three of them had been best friends since the fourth grade, and Jason and Olivia had become used to Claudia’s adventurous spirit. But sometimes she went a little too far, and this was starting to feel like one of those times. Claudia insisted that trekking out into the woods to explore an old condemned house would be the highlight of their Halloween, especially since it would be the last one they’d have together. The three of them were going their separate ways for university, and it was going to be the first time they’d been separated for longer than a weekend. Claudia was adamant on making it the most memorable Halloween they would have together. And it was keeping her mind off of the fact that she was devastated the three would be ripped apart. “Fucking life,” Claudia said under her breath as she thought about the future. “At least we have right now.”
