While some now suggest that the measurements could have lead to confusion as Sandy island was by a reef, maritime charts from 1848 confirmed that Sandy Island was a nonexistent island suggesting a probable case of cartogram confusion.

China’s Desert Grids

If you go explore the Gobi desert on Google Maps, you will see giant white grids drawn on the sand. Some of the grid lines are miles long and miles wide, and can only be seen from satellites.

There are several suggestions for what they are, including secret military test sites, satellite calibration sites, or even alien landing sites. To this very day, no one has an explanation for what the strange grids are in China’s deserts.

Near the Azores islands off the coast of Portugal, at one time Google Maps featured or showed a pyramid-like structure underwater at 60 meters high.

Some people said it was evidence of the lost city of Atlantis. Scientists said it could merely be natural formations. Regardless, it is such a perfect shape, it is undoubtedly one of the strangest things in Google Earth.

In the Australian Outback near Alice Springs, a satellite image found on Google Earth shows a giant triangle with circles within its triangle shape. Some claimed it is related to military training, and others have said it's actually an ancient geoglyph.

The official explanation was not stated, and is therefore another mysterious and strange unexplained symbol on maps of Earth.

Machu Picchu is one of the best known ancient sites. Google Earth has made strange discoveries and patterns relating to Machu Picchu that do not show up in the records.
