My Review of "Get Out"

I didn't think Jordan Peele would do so well in horror.

I had thought I had written a review for Get Out a while back but then I realized that I didn't start writing reviews until 2018. This movie came out in 2017. When I first saw this movie I was dumbfounded by the brilliance of how Jordan Peele had married race relations and horror. Not only did he do this but he did it in the most unexpected manner.

When I first saw the movie I didn't expect it to be about race because I didn't hear too much about the movie. Watching the movie again 3 years later it's a different type of viewing. I see weird little things that I didn't think much of when I first saw the movie. For example there's a little escape at the end that didn't quite make sense now but I didn't think of it when I first saw the movie.

For those that haven't seen the movie yet, surprise! There's a social commentary about the depiction of the black people. It starts out with the kidnapping of a black man by a mysterious driver. The audience doesn't know what to make of this because the movie continues on with what seems to be a different story.

We then jump right into a relationship between a mixed race couple. Daniel Kaluuya plays the main character Chris. He's a black man with a white girlfriend by the name of Rose, played by Allison Williams. The two seem very much in love with one another. They're taking it to the next step by meeting up with Rose's family in the country.

A number of crazy things happen on their way to meet with Rose's family but the movie really picks up when they get there. Her family is very much odd and mysterious. Chris starts to realize there's more to the trip than he thought and the movie escalates from there.

One of the pleasant surprises in the cast was Lil Rey Howery who plays Chris' good friend Rod. He very much plays as the comic relief of the movie. It's really well done because Rod enters the movie at just the right time to relieve tensions and allow the audience to relax. It's like Jordan Peele was making a meal with the right balance of sweet and savory to keep the audience wanting more.

Talking too much about the social commentary of the movie may actually ruin the movie for a lot of newcomers. It's basically explains the twist to the movie. I still find it clever even after watching this movie a number of times. It's a clever premise that is refreshing as it is original.

The horror aspect of the movie doesn't come from jump scares like you would expect from a horror movie. It stems more from the a sense of the unknown. Our own minds are making judgments and conclusions before they happen in the movie. For the most part we all will think of the worse and that's the brilliance of the horror in this movie. We don't know what's going to happen but we're already predicting the worse. Jordan Peele continues to put our minds for a spin because of his unpredictability.

The movie was really well thought out and very well crafted. For a first time director Jordan Peele has done an incredible job but I'm sure that this was a long process for him. Something of this magnitude doesn't just come to them in a short time without research and planning.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie even after multiple viewings. The horror isn't quite there after the first viewing because all of the secrets and twists are known. It's still enjoyable to reignite the fun that I had watching this movie again. I thought it was a really well crafted movie despite some holes in the story. I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. It was definitely re-watchable and I have suggested this movie to a number of friends.
