Let Us Be Friends

What happens when you reject a friendship?

A dark place

Olivia... Olivia Jones, a name I'd never forget. I am your average college girl. I guess you'd say I have quite the good amount of friends, but what does that matter... right? You would think that having an enormous group of friends, or your "circle" as we put it nowadays, would be somewhat important only in your entire high school career, but does it carry on? I guess I never did pay much attention to popularity or even the mere fact that I even had friends because I spent most of my time with my family either way.

-Present Time-

Great! 8 AM class, psychology. There's never anything as tedious as a morning college class to which I walk half asleep. Everything, normal as ever, although of course not as normal since I am basically called out every single session for having "internet addiction" but hey, what 18 year old doesn't love to check up on their insecurities on Instagram? Fast forward and we will get to the point: the very moment every hair in my body stood up as we were announced: "it seems as though your fellow student peer, Olivia Jones, is no longer with us."

I had no words. My mouth felt like it was glued shut, my eyes wide open in shock and for the rest of the day I became haunted by pure guilt... was this my fault?

Of course, you're probably wondering who Olivia even was... well, that is the thing, no one knows who she was, no one knew where she came from because, well, she had no friends. She ate alone, she lived on her own, she basically isolated herself from the rest of the world while at the same time, all she wanted was a friend. People have issues, that's the truth about the mad world we live in, but some people go through it ALL, and some decide it will not break them while others are so broken, they're basically impossible to fix. Well, that was Olivia Jones: a broken and lonely mess... a mystery to all.

Olivia. I actually got to meet her once. Who knew one simple Instagram request would haunt me forever.

I am on my account checking on the Kardashians, probably, and I get a follower request from, you guessed it, Olivia! I usually do not accept many requests but this one in particular caught my attention... her account was as mysterious as she was: dark images, images I couldn't quite decipher and to tell you the truth, they creeped me out quite a bit, not to mention the fact that she had 0 followers. She was posting each caption coded with a feeling, feelings she had, and she shared them with no one. No one, until I accepted and followed back. OK, I get it sounds creepy enough, but I did not want to be everyone else and judge without even getting to know the girl.

What's the big deal anyways... right?

"Hey!"

"thanks so much for accepting!"

"friends..forever!"

"It's almost your birthday, what time is the party?"

"sorry, am I being annoying.. please answer?!"

I did not know what to do, what to say. I was regretting my action but at the same time thought, "would it even hurt to try and get to know the girl?"

Yes, it hurt, and what I later did would change my life forever.

Of course, I replied and gave the occasional "hello" but that was about it. I didn't exactly want to hang out with her, but I also didn't want her to think I was avoiding her as well, and the problem only grew on from there. The day of my birthday came and I celebrated with friends, just friends. But, since everything is posted on social media, Olivia got around to the photos and I was bombarded with messages. Her anger was so great that she gained the courage to confront me in person... She grabbed my arm and the grip was so hard I felt a bruise forming. She looked straight into my eyes, and for once I saw the great pain she had dealt with all her life and she was unleashing it on me, a person she believed was her best friend, a person who she knows only through social media. She wanted to attend my party, she wanted to be there as my friend, but what made her think she was my friend to begin with?

The messages didn't end and I had no other way to escape from it, so I let my parents know. They advised for me to simply block her... but I can't block a person In life as well; she is always there, she knows where I hang out she knows where I live! It came to the point where I just needed to block her, the ongoing messages messed with my head, she made me feel guilty. She made me feel bad for not being "a good friend" when in reality, we weren't friends at all. A complete stranger became my worst nightmare only to realize the real nightmares were just about to begin.
