Kari Thomas was happy with the land that she had just purchased. She bought it off an older couple. They had the land for the past 50 years. She had purchased 500 acres in the heart of the USA. The couple had maintained 5 acres for their house and buildings and had another 493 sectioned of to used as farmland. Kari had found it odd that the couple had told her to stay away from a building in the middle of the land. It was an old run-down two-story house. They told her that every night a faint glow would come from one of the upper windows as if there was a candle in the windowsill. Kari thought that it was strange for them to leave the property. She was just going just destroy the building so that she could use the land. She had plans and she wasn’t going to let no ghost story stop her from fulfilling them.
The Day
Kari made her way to the house to investigate it. She wanted to see if there was anything worth salvaging before getting the tractor out and bulldozing the building. As she made her way into through the front door she found herself in what seemed to be an old style living room. There was two couches facing each other with a small coffee table between them. On the edge of on of the couches was a side table and it had an old antique radio sitting on it. The cord was chewed off about halfway down. The room was covered in dust. Kari walked up to one of the walls and was looking at what appeared to be picture frames hanging from the walls. She thought at least. They were so covered in dust that she couldn’t make out what was on the other side. As she wiped away the dust to reveal a young couple posed the woman was sitting with her hands folded on her lap and a dim smile. The husband was standing behind her with his hands on her shoulders. The picture appeared to be a painting. Kari could see the small brush strokes and the fibers of the canvas were starting to loosen up. The couple looked faintly like the couple she had bought the property from. It confused her. Why would they have just abandoned this house? Kari started to feel uneasy. She was concerned about being in the house. Something felt strange about the atmosphere. Like she wasn’t alone in the house and someone was still there with her. Kari started heading for the door. She just wanted to get away from the house. As she was leaving, she turned back around to look back at the house. She saw a blind on the front floor move as if someone was just standing watching her leave.
The Night
Kari couldn’t sleep. Something about the house was keeping her awake. She had no choice, but to go back to the old rundown house. Was their someone squatting there or was there something else lurking in the house. As she neared the house, she saw the faint glow in the upper window that the old couple had told her about. It was almost as if there was a candle sitting on the windowsill. As she entered the house, she noticed that the furniture had moved. It was set up with all the furniture facing the door. As if someone was waiting for Kari to return. She noticed that the radio was still on the end table, but she couldn’t see the cord anymore. Kari moved through the room looking for the stairs to the second level. She reached a door in the room and opened it to a kitchen. Just as she opened the door the radio kicked on and was playing music that sounded about 50 years old. Kari jumped at the sudden noise. Confused as to how the radio turned on, she walked over to it and picked it up. It continued to play even though the wire had been cut clean from the back of the old radio. Kari couldn’t find a battery slot for any batteries. As she was fiddling with the radio Kari noticed another door cracked open just a hair. She pointed her flashlight towards it and noticed that the stair well was behind the door. She moved towards the door and opened it shining her light up the stairs. The rats and mice had chewed the carpet almost clean off, but there were tuffs of the dull green pattern still on the old wooden steps. Kari started to climb up the stairs. As she walked up the steps they creaked with every step. She was growing increasing uneasy as she ascended the staircase, but she needed to learn who was in this house. She reached the top of the staircase and was standing at a beginning of a hallway. She looked down the hallway and saw a room with its door cracked open just slightly and a faint glow coming from the room. That was the room she was looking for. She wondered what she would find in there. Were there secretly squatters that were staying in the house or would she find nothing. Just a strange phenomenon caused by the house that had scared the old couple. As she started to open the door, she heard the radio on the first floor turn off. The noise was replaced with a soft whimper. It sounded like a young lady whimpering. As she turned into the room, she looked in a scene that looked like it was right out of a time capsule. She was in a room of a small girl. Before her stood the couple from the painting and a small little girl was laying in the bed. A candle on the windowsill was the only source of light in the room. Kari paused. She didn’t know what she was seeing. Nothing about this situation made any sense. How was the couple from the old, dusted photo standing before her right now? If it was the couple she had bought the house from they would have been much older and why would they have a small child in this house. As Kari looked closer at the child, she noticed that the child looked lifeless. The woman was holding a limp and the man had his hand on the woman’s shoulder and his eyes were shut. The woman continued to softly whimper. Kari started to back out of the room. Convinced that her mind was playing tricks on her. As she stepped backwards a board creaked underneath her feet. The woman looked up her eyes peering straight through Kari. All of sudden her mouth opened, and she started to shriek and scream “YOU KILLED HER! YOU KILLED HER!” Her mouth continued to open more and more, and her teeth grew and became as sharp as needles. Her skin turned grey and her eyes went black. Kari stumbled out of the room and started to run for the stairs. She turned to head back down the stairs, but her foot went straight through the top step. It didn’t break though her foot just went through it. Kari’s moment carried her headfirst down through the now ghostly staircase. As she fell she saw the floor open up saw the concrete of the cellar below the house. She was heading straight for it. *Crack* As Kari’s head hit the concrete her neck snapped, and her head split open. She didn’t die right away from her injuries. She had landed so that her face was looking towards the wall. She saw the chains on the wall they were holding up a brittle skeleton. The skeleton was looking right at her as if to say that she was next. The house had claimed its next victim. The old couple weren’t alive. They were ghosts that lived off the life force of their victims. To keep the memory of their only child alive. The light in the windowsill glowed brighter for the rest of that night and thanks to the newest sacrifice would glow for 3 more years until next victim could be claimed.
