In the year 2009. Jason Rivers had arrived in Mason County to shoot the next episode of his web series. He was a content creator that had made a name for himself by doing solo investigations of mythical creatures. He had made dives looking for the loch ness monster and countless hikes looking for the elusive Sasquatch. He would usually stay on location 3 nights to get enough footage and action to cover a 20-minute episode. His audience insisted that he go after more mythical creatures. That is what he was doing here. He had amassed the audience he had because he listened to his audience. He wanted to give them what they wanted. Mason County was home to the Mothman. A creature that first appeared in the sixty’s and was credited for taking down a bridge that killed 46 people. This was a creature that brought bad luck to the people that saw it.

First Night
Jason always wanted to go for the full experience so he had everything he would need to stay in the woods for three nights without any outside assistance. He had extra batteries and food to last for 4 or 5 nights. He always wanted extra in case he wanted to set up any video traps. Jason had set up his camp during the day and started out of camp right as the sun started to retreat behind the horizon. He wanted to make good use of the first night. Make sure that he could find the hot spots to help the next couple of nights. As he started into the woods he could feel the cold of the night set in. He liked it. This was the weather that he liked to hunt in. Animals moved slower in the cold.
As Jason made his way into the woods he started to notice that it was unusually quiet. He didn’t hear the sounds of bats flying or crickets chirping. He was put off by this but kept pushing. He found a clearing and decided that this would be a great place to set up a video trap. It was an open clearing and there was evidence of animals bedding down there. He would go through this footage when during the morning and afternoon. As he was setting up the trap he felt as if he was being watched. He acted a little bit longer as if he was setting up the camera to see if the feeling was real or if what was watching him would get bored and turn away. His curiosity eventually got the best of him though. He whipped around and that is when he saw it at the other side of the clearing. Up in the tree line, he saw two floating red orbs. Looking right back at him. Jason was frozen. He had just hit the record button on the camera, but he was blocking the lens. It felt like an eternity that Jason was standing there, but eventually, he saw the orbs blink and then turned away. Then Jason heard something that sounded like wings battering branches and the feeling was gone. Jason heard the normal noises of the forest come back and decided to head back to camp and call it a night.

Second Day
Jason woke up to a cracking sound. The sound of a cracking branch wasn’t unfamiliar. The thing that spooked Jason was how close it was. Jason bolted upright. And right as he sat up it crashed through his tent. Jason was startled by the branch coming through the tent. It almost seemed as if the branch was deliberately broken. Jason wasn’t a rookie camper he always checked what was above him. There were no deadfall branches or weak branches above his tent when he set it up and there was almost zero wind. Jason then looked up. He couldn’t see any broken branches. The leaves matched, but there was nothing that showed a branch broke off. Something had dropped the branch. Jason thanked his lucky stars and documented the events that had just occurred and then went about repairing the tent.

Second Night
Jason entered the night a little on edge. Knowing that the branch would have killed him if he hadn’t woken up and heard something. He also felt the eyes on him again as he began the night. Jason made is way into the forest. He moved slowly and quietly as to not disturb the brush around him. As he went he would occasionally hear large wafts of wind from about his head. He knew he was being followed. Jason started to think of a way to shake what was following him while still getting the proof that he needed for his series. As he went he started to hear the wafts getting closer. As if what was following him was getting closer to him. He knew that he need to do something fast. That was when Jason remembered. He had found a cliff while he was exploring during the day. If he could make his way over there. Maybe he could lose the monster by going over it and ducking back into the wall. From what he had remembered it was only about a 10 ft. drop onto a soft forest floor. Jason started to pick up speed and he heard the wafting of the wings pick up as well. It was definitely chasing him. He neared where the cliff was and turned on his flashlight to help judge where he needed to jump. It was getting closer. Jason heard it crash through the forest canopy. Barely missing a beat. That sound was familiar. It sounded like the branch snapping from the morning. Whatever was chasing him had tried to crush him once already. He was at a full sprint as he neared the cliff. It felt like the monster was right on top of him and then he jumped. He expected to see the ground approaching as he went over the cliff, but it actually started to go away. He felt something under his arms. The monster had snatched him mid-jump. He wrestled his way free but was thirty feet in the air. He started falling headfirst and right before he hit the ground he flattened out a bit. Dazed and confused he tried to collect himself and get back up but he couldn’t. Then he felt the deep long claws pierce his back. He lost his breath as both his lungs were punctured. The ground started to drift away as he was picked back up. He lifted his head to see what was trying to kill him. He saw the bright red eyes staring right back at him. Lifeless and soulless. The monster had the disgusting head of a moth and massive wings.
“So, you are real,” Jason muttered to himself. He then began to fall again. Headfirst back towards the ground. Jason didn’t feel the crushing of his skull or spine. He was dead before he had hit the ground. The elevated heart rate from running and the punctured lungs caused his heart to stop beating from the shock.
This is a story of fiction based on the Mothman. There is no record of Jason Rivers ever existing and no knowledge of this story being based on an actual story or experience.
