It just wasn’t the same anymore. Even with her fantastic costume—a 19th-century schoolmistress outfit complete with an old, leather-bound book—Halloween just felt like it was starting to lose its magic. I wish Halloween was still fun, she thought.
“You coming, Charlie?” Margot asked.
“I suppose so,” said Charlie. “You go first, I’m right behind you.” She tried to sound as excited as her little sister looked. She couldn’t help but smile as Margot spun around with her hands over her head, causing her frosty blue Elsa dress to billow out, the fabric lifting and swirling along with her. She spun one too many times, stumbled, caught herself after two steps, and ran toward the door of the house, giggling to herself. At least she was having fun.
It wasn’t until the sun had fully set an hour later that Charlie noticed it. At first, it was just a gentle breeze. The branches of half-naked trees clacked together like bones rattling in the wind. Overhead, a few stray leaves broke loose of their moorings and drifted down to join their kin in a swirling, restless dance. Nearby, a wind chime joined in, resonating dissonantly against the joyful sound of excited children, creating a Halloween symphony that sent chills down her spine.
Then, as if summoned by the spooky ambient ballad, a dense fog began to creep in on the breeze. It settled like a murky blanket over the landscape, cloaking the neighborhood in a ghostly shroud. Slowly and inevitable as the tide, it continued to rise until, looking down, Charlie realized she could no longer see her own feet.
“Charlie?” Margot said, her voice trembling. “Charlie, what’s happening?”
“We have to go. Now,” Charlie said. She grabbed Margot’s hand and tried to run, but it was impossible. Her sister’s legs were simply too short to keep up with Charlie’s long strides, and it only took a few steps for her to lose her footing. She fell to the ground with a muffled harumph and began to cry.
Charlie turned, but Margot was nowhere to be found. She could hear her sniffling, but the roiling, impenetrable fog had already risen past her knees. She opened her mouth to call for her, but Margot screamed first, “Charlie!” The cry quickly faded into silence, as though something had snatched her sister and pulled her into the depths of the miasma.
Heart pounding, Charlie dropped to her knees and reached out blindly, her hands slicing through the dense fog. "Margot!" she called, her voice trembling. But she was gone. When she stood back up, she found the world wasn’t as she had left it. Instead of her familiar neighborhood, she found herself standing in a dark and foggy wood. From behind her came a ragged, forceful huff and the sound of shod hooves. She turned. It was a headless Hessian. He held a saber in one hand and a jack-o-lantern in the other. “Tell me, Charlie—are we having fun yet?” he said.
