Spirit of a Cat

Right in the middle of the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen you'll find Rosenborg Castle. Today it is home to the Royal Life Guard and the spirit of a cat. Supposedly the cat was the pet of a guard who was killed in a shooting accident. Probably still seeking his owner the cat has been seen walking about in the dark.

Ghostly Countess

In southern Jutland at Gram Castle when night falls the ghostly spirit of Countess Anne Sophia Schack roams about this lovely 16th-century castle. Legend has it that this countess ruled harshly in the 18th century and was known to hit and yell at her servants. Apparently, she pushed a maid into the fireplace and she burned to death, Her restless spirit roams about probably looking for another victim to abuse.

Rising From the Catacombs

Kronborg Castle is the most famous castle in Denmark, located in the North Zealand region. This Renaissance castle was the setting for the play "Hamlet" written by Shakespeare where Hamlet sees the spirit of his father roaming on the ramparts of the castle. Legend has it that Holger Danske, a mighty knight sleeps in the catacombs beneath the castle. He is ready to rise and protect Denmark at any time. Other spirits here light candles during the night, unlock doors, and do other activities to make sounds in the night.

The White Lady

Egeskov Castle on Funen looks like a castle from a fairy tale. Today it is home to a ghostly spirit. The story tells of Rigborg, the daughter of the builder Frantz Brockenhuus. Because the love she was seeking was unrequited Rigborg took her own life. Today she roams the corridors of the castle dressed all in white and has been named the White Lady.

Bricked Up Alive In the Tower Room

On Djursland the lovely Rosenholm Castle has a dark past. It was built in 1559 and was owned by the noble Danish Rosenkrantz family. Today there are ghostly spirits that roam about the castle. One of them is the restless soul of a noblewoman who once fell in love with the steward. When the love affair was discovered the noblewoman was bricked up alive in a wall in the Tower Room and the knight's head was chopped off. Today you can catch a glimpse of a lady dressed in white and a headless knight roaming about. These are thought to be the two tragic lovers.

Spirit of a Tyrant

Voergarrd Castle in north Jutland is home to the spirit of the former owner Ingeborg Skeel. At the end of the 16th century when she ruled the castle she was thought to be a tyrant. Her restless spirit roams about the castle moaning and groaning. Doors are heard slamming and candles are blown out.

The Most Haunted Castle

In the North Zealand region, Dragsholm Castle is one of the oldest in Denmark and also has the reputation of being the most haunted. The castle is home to many ghosts among them a very noisy bunch of poltergeists. There are also the spirits of a White Lady and a Gray Lady. These are just a few of the sprits you can encounter here but if the stories are true actually the castle has more than 800 ghostly spirits, Since Dragsholm Castle has been turned into a hotel you can book yourself a room and see who you wind up spending the night with.

The White Lady is the daughter of the former owner. Her spirit roams around the hallways at night. She too has a tale to tell of a tragic love affair between her and a commoner. The lovers were discovered by the girl's father. In anger, he had his daughter imprisoned in a room in the castle. When workers made renovations to the castle they found a skeleton in a white gown in one of the walls.

The Grey Lady is the sprite of a servant at the castle. At one time she suffered from a terrible toothache and was cured by a doctor at the castle. To express her thank you for this her spirit returns to the castle to check that everything is all right with visitors.

The Earl of Bothwell James Hepburn died after being imprisoned in the cellars beneath Dragsholm Castle for many years. His ghostly spirit haunts the cobbled courtyard and the sounds of horses and carriages can be heard.
