Why We Celebrate Republic Day

26 January 1950 is a very special day for every Indian. This is the day when the Constitution was born in India. Today, courts pronounce their verdict in any case by taking oath on this Constitution. However, before this, our country had seen the sacrifices of many heroes. This day is very special in many ways, but do you know why 26 January was chosen for Republic Day? Let's try to find the answer to this question today.

After independence from the British on 15 August 1947, the Constitution of India was implemented on 26 January 1950. Since then, the whole country has been celebrating this day as Republic Day with great pride and enthusiasm.

Republic Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. Due to this, India became a democratic republic. Republic Day is the day when the Constitution of India came into force. The first Republic Day was celebrated on 26 January 1950. The Republic Day parade is held on 26 January at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.

Many events made 26 January an important day in the history of the freedom struggle. This is the reason why this day was chosen as the day when India became a democratic republic. The Congress Party (INC) passed the Purna Swaraj resolution in its Lahore session on 19 December 1929. This resolution demanded complete independence for India. This resolution was passed after talks between the British and the leaders of the freedom movement regarding the Dominion status of India were inconclusive. This was the complete failure of the Irwin Pact. This led to the announcement of the Purna Swaraj resolution and Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolor flag on the banks of the Ravi River. In this resolution it was declared that India will celebrate its Independence Day on 26th January. It was celebrated as Poorna Swaraj Day for 17 years.

The Constitution was accepted on 26 November 1949

The country had gained independence, but till now it did not have an official constitution. In such a situation, a committee was formed on 29 August 1947, which was to draft the constitution. This committee was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days for this constitution to be completely ready. After many meetings, on 26 November 1949, the constitution of the country was accepted in the Constituent Assembly. After this, it was implemented on 26 January 1950.

That's why 26 January was chosen

The main reason for implementing the constitution on 26 January was the complete independence of the country. Actually, on 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress declared India as Purna Swaraj i.e. complete independence. Twenty years later, when the Constitution of India was accepted on 26 November 1949, the day of 26 January was chosen to implement it i.e. the same day when the country was declared as Purna Swaraj.

The constitution was written by hand

It is worth noting that the handwritten constitution of India is still completely safe in the library of the Parliament. It is considered to be the world's largest handwritten constitution. On January 24, 1950, two copies of the constitution were signed in Hindi and English languages. Actually, the constitution is handwritten in both Hindi and English languages.
