The War That Lasted 335 Years — Without a Single Shot Fired

The bizarre true story of a conflict that began by accident, was forgotten for centuries, and ended with laughter instead of blood

What if I told you there was once a war that lasted 335 years, yet not a single drop of blood was spilled?

No soldiers marching. No gunfire echoing across the sea.

Just... silence.

And yet, for centuries, two nations were technically enemies — bound by a forgotten declaration that outlived generations, kings, and even empires.

This is the strange, true story of The Dutch and the Isles of Scilly, and how a simple misunderstanding in the 1600s turned into one of history’s longest — and quietest — wars.

Act 1 — The Forgotten Beginning (1651)

It all started in 1651, during the chaos of the English Civil War.

The nation was torn in two:

The Royalists, loyal to King Charles I.

The Parliamentarians, led by the iron-fisted Oliver Cromwell.

After years of brutal fighting, the Royalists were losing ground fast. In desperation, a small group fled westward — to the tiny Isles of Scilly, just off the coast of Cornwall, hoping to regroup and strike back.

Unfortunately, they didn’t realize they’d just stepped into one of history’s strangest accidents.

At the time, the Dutch Republic was allied with Cromwell’s Parliamentarians. The Dutch had suffered attacks from Royalist ships and demanded repayment for their losses.

The Royalists refused.

So, in March 1651, the Netherlands formally declared war on the Isles of Scilly.

Yes — an entire nation declared war on a handful of small islands.

Act 2 — The War That Nobody Fought

Here’s where the absurdity truly begins.

When the Dutch navy arrived near Scilly, they expected battle.

Instead, they found... nothing.

No army. No defenses. Barely a few scattered homes and fishing boats.

Realizing there was no real threat, the Dutch simply left — without firing a single shot.

But no one remembered to officially end the war.

The declaration sat in dusty archives, forgotten by everyone — even the Dutch themselves.

As the years turned into decades, and decades into centuries, the world changed completely.

The United States didn’t exist yet when the war began — and by the time someone rediscovered it, man had already walked on the moon.

Still, on paper, the war between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly continued... for 335 years.

Act 3 — The Peace That Came Too Late

Fast-forward to 1986.

A Dutch historian named Roy Duncan stumbled upon a curious mention of the long-lost war while doing archival research.

He wrote to the Dutch embassy in London, asking if it was true.

To everyone’s surprise, the embassy confirmed:

There had never been a peace treaty.

And so, in a beautifully ironic twist of history, the Dutch ambassador traveled to the Isles of Scilly in April 1986 to sign an official peace treaty — three and a half centuries after the war had started.

Locals gathered on the harbor, laughing as the ambassador shook hands with island officials. Cameras clicked. Wine was poured. The world’s longest bloodless war had finally come to an end — not with gunfire, but with smiles.

Act 4 — A Lesson Hidden in History

It’s easy to laugh at how absurd it sounds — a 335-year war with no soldiers, no casualties, and no one even remembering it existed.

But hidden in that absurdity is a quiet lesson:

Sometimes, the best wars are the ones never fought.

The War of the Isles of Scilly reminds us that conflict isn’t always destiny.

Sometimes, peace can simply wait… until someone remembers to sign the papers.

Quick Fact:

If counted officially, the 335-Year War lasted longer than the entire British Empire’s control over India — and all without a single casualty.
