From royal families and folk fairs to ancient buildings and vibrant festivals—Shahzadpur is where the past still speaks, and every corner has something to share.

Early Sikh Rule

Sardar Karam Singh was the first Sikh ruler of Shahzadpur. He came from Marahka Village, which is now in Pakistan. He ruled for 20 years, from 1764 until his death in 1784. He mostly lived in Talwandi Sabo, a holy place in Punjab.

After him, his elder son Gulab Singh became the ruler and ruled until 1844. Then, his son Sardar Shiv Kirpal Singh Sandhu took over. Even though Sikh rule officially ended in 1809 when the British took control, the family continued to live with some power until 1947. The British gave them land (Jagirs) and allowed them to keep some respect and authority.

Role of Gurbakhsh Singh and Daya Kaur

When Karam Singh was away, Gurbakhsh Singh ruled Shahzadpur from 1786. After his death, his wife Daya Kaur became the ruler. She led the estate very well for over 37 years.

In November 1808, Maharaja Ranjit Singh attacked Shahzadpur and nearby Naraingarh. The ruler of Shahzadpur asked the British for help. After British forces stepped in, Ranjit Singh retreated.

British Control

In 1809, the British Government officially took over Shahzadpur and other Cis-Sutlej states. Later, the British built Ambala Cantt on land that once belonged to Shahzadpur.
