The Delhi Riots of 2020: A Coordinated Attack
Delhi Riots and Foreign Influence: The Hidden Hands at Play

The Violence That Wasn’t Spontaneous
February 2020 saw Delhi engulfed in violence, with 53 people dead and hundreds injured. While many attribute the riots to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), deeper analysis reveals that the CAA was merely an excuse—an event hijacked to fuel political and religious unrest. With foreign interference, radical elements, and political opportunists involved, the riots had far more sinister undertones. Even in 2025, with legal cases dragging on, the larger conspiracy remains evident.
The CAA: The False Trigger for a Larger Plot
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), enacted in December 2019, aimed to provide expedited citizenship to non-Muslim refugees fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Given historical accounts of Hindu persecution—such as the 1979 Marichjhapi massacre and the steady decline of Hindu populations in Bangladesh—the CAA served as a much-needed lifeline for these groups.
However, political parties and activists misrepresented the Act, falsely linking it to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and creating panic within the Muslim community. Sonia Gandhi’s December 14, 2019, speech at Ramlila Maidan intensified the protests, culminating in the Shaheen Bagh agitation. The riots that followed in February 2020 bore all the signs of premeditated violence rather than organic public outrage.
Foreign Interference: Canada’s Role and Global Agendas
Canada’s involvement in anti-India activities has a long history. The 1985 Air India bombing, orchestrated by Sikh extremists in Canada, remains one of the deadliest acts of terror against Indian civilians. Yet, Canadian authorities failed to take preventive action.
In 2020, during India’s farmer protests, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made statements that Indian officials saw as direct interference. Similarly, climate activist Greta Thunberg’s "toolkit" tweet in 2021 raised alarms about a coordinated international attempt to portray India as an oppressive state. These global efforts suggest that forces outside India had vested interests in destabilizing the country.
Radical Elements and the Manipulation of Protests
The Shaheen Bagh protests, lasting over 100 days, demonstrated how political and radical elements manipulated public sentiment. The Delhi riots mirrored past instances of anti-Hindu violence, such as the 1946 Noakhali massacre and the 2023-2024 Sandeshkhali attacks in West Bengal. These events show a clear pattern of targeting Hindu communities under the guise of political unrest.
Trump’s Visit and the Suspicious Timing of the Riots
The riots coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to India on February 24, 2020. As Trump praised India’s diversity and democracy in his Ahmedabad speech, the media’s attention quickly shifted to the bloodshed in Delhi. The strategic timing suggests that the riots were meant to tarnish India’s global image and embarrass the Modi government.
Judiciary’s Failure: No Accountability for the Perpetrators
Legal proceedings related to the Delhi riots have moved at a snail’s pace. As of March 2025, only 126 cases have been resolved out of over 750 FIRs, with a striking 80% acquittal rate. Accused figures like Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam remain embroiled in prolonged trials. The judiciary’s inaction has sent a dangerous message—that politically motivated violence can go unpunished.
The Riots Were Engineered, Not Spontaneous
The Delhi riots of 2020 were not about the CAA. They were a deliberate attempt to destabilize India using communal tensions as a tool. With foreign players, political interference, and radical groups all involved, the riots exposed a broader plot against India’s sovereignty. Five years later, with ongoing legal struggles and increasing evidence of external involvement, it is clear that the violence was far from a simple protest—it was an attack on India’s stability.
