The Deeds of Mullah Nasiruddin

(Article No. 1270)

Mullah Nasiruddin is a name that almost everyone has heard. His stories are famous across cultures for their humor, wisdom, and clever twists. Although he appeared simple and playful, Mullah Nasiruddin possessed sharp intelligence and deep insight. His actions often carried hidden lessons that made people laugh first and think later. The following incidents from his life highlight his wit, presence of mind, and moral intelligence.

When Mullah Nasiruddin was getting married, great arrangements were made. He was dressed as a groom and seated proudly on a horse. Suddenly, to everyone’s shock, he ran away. The wedding guests were extremely worried and confused. After about two hours, Mullah returned calmly. When people asked why he had fled, he replied innocently that it was the groom’s last chance to run away, but he came back because he feared the guests would not get food and might remain hungry. Hearing this, everyone burst into laughter. This incident shows Mullah’s humorous way of reducing tension and his concern for others, even at his own wedding.

On another occasion, Mullah visited his in-laws. His mother-in-law considered herself very clever. She asked him what he would like to eat: pumpkin curry, okra, or spinach. Mullah made a very humble face and said that he was a sinful person and without ablution, so he could not even take the names of such “holy” vegetables. Instead, he requested that she cook a naughty, disobedient, wandering rooster. His mother-in-law was left speechless and had no choice but to cook the chicken. This story reflects Mullah’s smart use of words to get what he wanted without offending anyone directly.

Once, Mullah was traveling with his wife. She complained that she was extremely thirsty and asked him to buy her a refreshing drink. Riding on a donkey, Mullah replied that when they reached the next inn, he would treat her to roasted chicken, tamarind chutney, lemon salad, and a cold, delicious drink. His wife became very happy just listening to the menu. Then Mullah calmly said that she should satisfy herself with the water that had filled her mouth from excitement, and they would drink actual water once they reached home. This humorous moment highlights how imagination can sometimes comfort us more than reality.

Another famous incident occurred at a wedding feast where many delicious dishes were served, including roasted goat. Mullah was sitting next to a religious scholar. When the dish arrived, the scholar cleverly turned the platter so that the goat’s legs faced him. Mullah noticed this trick. He suddenly pointed somewhere and distracted the scholar, then rotated the platter toward himself. When the scholar turned back, he again changed the direction. At this point, Mullah loudly declared that the goat’s legs were facing the Kaaba, causing everyone to commit sin. He added that if the legs faced him, everyone would be saved from sin. Embarrassed, the scholar remained silent while Mullah enjoyed the best portion. This incident reflects Mullah’s sharp awareness and fearless intelligence.

On the king’s birthday, generous gifts were distributed. Mullah, being close to the king, received thousands of dinars. Someone advised him that charity increases lifespan, health, and blessings. Mullah understood the advice and decided to dedicate a well for public use. He purchased a well from a Jewish man. However, the man later became greedy and filed a case in the king’s court, claiming that Mullah had only bought the well, not the water, so he should not be allowed to use it.

When summoned, Mullah calmly stated that he had indeed bought the well, not the water. He requested the king to order the man to remove his water from the well or pay rent for storing it. The king ordered the man to remove the water within five days or pay compensation. Unable to do so, the man apologized and paid the penalty. Mullah donated that money as well. Poor people prayed for him wholeheartedly.

These stories teach us that wisdom does not always appear serious. Sometimes, laughter carries the strongest lesson. Mullah Nasiruddin’s life reminds us that intelligence, presence of mind, and moral courage can overcome greed, arrogance, and hypocrisy—with a smile.
