Appointing Dhaumya as Their Priest

The Pandavas approached Dhaumya with humility and respect, asking him to become their spiritual guide and protector. Yudhishthira, as the eldest and most devoted to the path of righteousness, spoke on behalf of his brothers, saying, “O learned sage, we have endured many trials and seek your guidance to help us walk the path of dharma. We humbly ask you to accept the role of our priest and protector.”

Dhaumya, moved by the sincerity of the Pandavas and recognizing their commitment to dharma, accepted their request. He blessed them, saying, “May your journey be protected, and may you succeed in all that is righteous. With the blessings of the divine, may your path be illuminated by knowledge and justice.” Dhaumya then performed auspicious rituals for the Pandavas, invoking divine protection and strength for their journey.

From that day onward, Dhaumya accompanied the Pandavas, serving not only as their priest but as a source of wisdom and counsel. His presence brought them peace and spiritual resilience, helping them face the many challenges that lay ahead. Dhaumya’s guidance reinforced their dedication to dharma, and his blessings assured them that they were moving forward with divine support.

News of Draupadi’s Swayamvara

As the Pandavas continued their travels with Dhaumya, they received news of a grand event in the kingdom of Panchala: King Drupada had organized a swayamvara for his daughter, Draupadi. The swayamvara was to be attended by the greatest princes and warriors of the land, all vying for Draupadi’s hand in marriage. The announcement of the swayamvara quickly spread far and wide, attracting kings, princes, and warriors from across Bharatavarsha, each hoping to win the princess’s favor.

For the Pandavas, this event presented an opportunity not only to witness a royal gathering but also to explore alliances that might strengthen their position. They were still living in secrecy and moving under the guise of Brahmins to avoid detection by Duryodhana and the Kauravas. Attending the swayamvara as Brahmins would allow them to blend in, avoiding attention while observing the powerful warriors and leaders who would gather there.

Moreover, Yudhishthira, wise and far-seeing, sensed that Draupadi’s swayamvara could be a significant moment in their journey. He felt a sense of destiny drawing them to Panchala, though he could not fully understand the implications at the time.

The Journey to Panchala

With Dhaumya’s blessings, the Pandavas, along with Kunti, set out for the kingdom of Panchala, adopting simple attire to maintain their disguise. They traveled on foot, taking unfrequented paths and resting in secluded spots along the way. Alongside Dhaumya, they performed daily rituals and prayers, seeking the gods’ favor and guidance on their journey.

As they neared Panchala, they witnessed the grandeur of the preparations for the swayamvara. The streets were decorated, filled with merchants, musicians, and performers who had come to celebrate the royal event. The air buzzed with excitement, and people from all walks of life gathered to catch a glimpse of the powerful and renowned suitors who would vie for Draupadi’s hand.

Upon arriving, the Pandavas and Kunti found shelter among the Brahmins of Panchala, staying in a modest ashram. Their life in disguise as wandering ascetics made it easy for them to blend in, and they went about their day with simplicity, attending gatherings and listening to conversations. As Brahmins, they were able to move freely without arousing suspicion, yet they remained cautious, aware that any mistake could expose them to the Kauravas or other enemies.

Preparing for the Swayamvara

Dhaumya, aware of the significance of the swayamvara, instructed the Pandavas to be patient and observant. He advised them to show restraint and humility, despite the challenging events they had faced in their journey so far. “Remember, you are here as Brahmins,” Dhaumya reminded them. “Conduct yourselves with respect and patience, and trust in destiny to guide your path.”

The Pandavas heeded Dhaumya’s counsel, grateful for his wisdom and protection. Though they were trained warriors, they followed his advice, embracing their role as Brahmins and avoiding any unnecessary attention. They took their places among the Brahmins who had gathered to witness the swayamvara, watching as warriors from across the land arrived in grand chariots, accompanied by royal entourages.

The Grand Arena of the Swayamvara

The arena for the swayamvara was magnificent, decorated with ornate banners, colorful garlands, and seats arranged for royalty. A central platform had been constructed for the ceremony, and on it stood a bow and a target—a unique challenge devised by King Drupada to test the suitors’ strength and skill. The challenge required a display of not only strength but also precision, qualities that Drupada hoped to find in a worthy husband for his daughter.

As the Pandavas observed the arena, they marveled at the might and power of the assembled kings and warriors. It was clear that Draupadi’s swayamvara had drawn the best of the best, each man confident in his abilities and eager to win the princess’s hand. The Pandavas, however, remained humble, watching patiently from among the Brahmins as the proceedings began.
