They realized that Vindhya’s arrogance needed to be curbed, but they were uncertain how to address the issue. They concluded that only a wise and revered sage could convince Vindhya to stop its ascent.

The devas approached Sage Agastya, one of the most respected sages, renowned for his wisdom, humility, and deep understanding of dharma. Agastya was also known for his ability to control and transform the natural world through his penance and knowledge. The gods believed that Agastya’s wisdom could help in humbling Vindhya.

After a brief conversation, Agastya made a simple request. He told Vindhya, “I need to travel south with my wife, and it would be very difficult to cross your tall peaks. Could you lower yourself so that we can pass comfortably?”

Hearing the sage’s polite request, Vindhya felt honored to be of service to such a revered sage. The mountain lowered itself, bending its peaks to allow Agastya and Lopamudra to pass with ease. Vindhya took pride in serving the sage, believing it was a temporary act of humility that did not diminish its power.

As Agastya crossed over the Vindhya range, he made another request to the mountain. He said, “Vindhya, I am journeying south for an important purpose, and it may take me a long time to return. Could you please remain in this lowered position until I come back?”

Out of respect and admiration for Sage Agastya, Vindhya agreed, promising to stay in its bent position until the sage returned. Agastya, knowing the significance of the promise, blessed Vindhya and continued his journey southward with Lopamudra.

Agastya’s Permanent Residence in the South

Agastya, wise as he was, never intended to return to the north. He made his home in the southern regions of Bharatavarsha and never went back north of the Vindhya range. As a result, Vindhya remained in its lowered position, patiently waiting for Agastya’s return.
