NOT CERTIFIED TO DIVE SO DEEP.

JOINING ME NOW, THE HOST OF

DISCOVERY CHANNELS EXPEDITION

UNKNOWN, JOSH GATES, HE TURNED

DOWN A TRIP TO THE TITANIC ON

OCEANGATE TITAN SUBMERSIBLE DUE

TO SAFETY CONCERNS.

THAT IS THE VESSEL THAT WAS

LOST THIS WEEK.

AND DAVID MARKEY, RETIRED U.S.

NAVY CAPTAIN AND SUBMARINE

COMMANDER.

HE IS A BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF

TURN THE SHIP AROUND, AND

LEADERSHIP HIS LANGUAGE.

DAVID, YOU AND I SPOKE ON

AND THIS IS THE OUTCOME YOU

EXPECTED.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

NOW I THINK THAT THEY ARE

GOING TO TRY TO PICK UP SOME OF

THE PIECES OF THE LITTLE ROVERS

THAT THEY HAVE.

AND BRING THEM UP TO THE

SURFACE PUT THEM BACK TO

GATHER.

AND WE NEED TO DO AN ANALYSIS

ON THE VESSEL TO SEE EXACTLY

WHERE THE FAILURE WAS THAT

CAUSE THIS IMPLOSION.

THE HULL OF THE VESSEL, THE

MAIN PART IS MADE OF THREE

DIFFERENT MATERIALS.

THE CARBON FIBER SLEEVE, THE --

THEIR FAMILIES, A REALLY

DIFFICULT SITUATION.

AND I THINK A LOT OF QUESTIONS

NOW THAT NEED TO BE ASKED AND

ANSWERED IN THE COMING WEEKS

AND MONTHS ABOUT THIS PLATFORM,

AND ABOUT HOW IT WAS BUILT.

AND FUNDAMENTALLY, HOW SAFE IT

REALLY WAS.

YOU FELT THAT IT WASN'T,

JOSH, YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY

TO GO ON THIS VESSEL WITH THIS

COMPANY AND YOU CHOSE NOT TO.

TALK TO US ABOUT THAT.

I WENT UP HER OCEANGATE

HEADQUARTERS IN WASHINGTON.

I SPENT SEVERAL DAYS UP THERE

WITH STOCKTON AND WITH OTHER

OCEANGATE EMPLOYEES AND

ENGINEERS I TOOK A RIDE IN

TIGHTEN, IN 2021, JUST A FEW

MONTHS BEFORE TITAN WAS GONNA

TAKE ITS FIRST GROUP OF

PASSENGERS DOWN TO THE TITANIC.

AND IT HAD JUST COME BACK FROM

A PRESSURE TEST ON THE EAST

COAST.

AND WE WENT TO A FUTURE SOUND,

AND, LOOK, THERE ARE ELEMENTS

TO TIGHTEN THAT WERE VERY

IMPRESSIVE WHEN YOU FIRST WALK

UP TO THE SUB.

IT IS A VERY LARGE VEHICLE FOR

THIS KIND OF A MISSION, MOST OF

THE SUBS THAT GO DOWN TO THE

TITANIC ARE TWO AND THREE

PERSON.

VERY CRAMPED SUBMERSIBLES,

PEYTON HAS A NOVEL DESIGN.

SO IMPRESSIVE WHEN YOU FORESEE

IT.

AND A VERY UNIQUE DESIGN.

BUT FUNDAMENTALLY, IT IS SO

LARGE BECAUSE IT IS MADE IN A

VERY NOVEL WAY.

IT IS MADE OF THIS CARBON FIBER,

AS A OPPOSED TO HAVING A

PRESSURE HULL BUILT OUT OF

TITANIUM.

AND THAT CARBON FIBER IS THE

REAL QUESTION MARK HERE, IT

CERTAINLY WAS FOR ME.

THERE IS VERY LITTLE DATA ABOUT

HOW THAT MATERIAL IS GOING TO

BEHAVE AND THE KIND OF PRESSURE

CYCLES IT WAS GOING TO BE PUT

THROUGH.

AND THE KIND OF TEMPERATURES IT

WAS GOING TO BE EXPOSED TO.

AND THERE WAS SIMPLY NOTHING TO

BENCHMARK IT AGAINST.

AND SO, THE MORE TIME I SPENT

IN TITAN AND TALKED WITH

STOCKTON RUSH, I COULDN'T GET

COMFORTABLE WITH THE FACT THAT

THERE WAS ALMOST NO WAY TO

ASSESS THE RISK OF THE VEHICLE.

IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.

 DAVE IT HAS BEEN AN AWFUL

FEW DAYS AS PEOPLE HAVE

FOLLOWED THE STORY.

AS FRIENDS, AND FAMILY, HAVE

WAITED IN PANIC.

THE NAVY NOW SAYS IT DETECTED

SOUNDS CONSISTENT WITH AN

IMPLOSION SHORTLY AFTER THE SUB

WENT MISSING.

AND TOLD THE ONSITE COMMANDER,

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT?

WHY ARE WE ONLY LEARNING ABOUT

THIS NOW?

 I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.

IT SUPPOSEDLY TOP SECRET.

BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT AN

IMPLOSION LIKE THIS WOULD BE

VERY LOUD, AND AN UNUSUAL SOUND

IN THE OCEAN AND THOSE DEEP

SOUND CHANNELS, IT'S VERY DENSE,

IT'S VERY COLD WATER.

AND IT REALLY CARRIES SOUND A

LONG, LONG WAY.

1000 MILES, OR 1500 MILES.

SO THAT NOISE IF YOU'RE

LISTENING FOR IT?

YOU COULD HEAR IT A LONG LONG

WAY AWAY.

 I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ASK THIS

THEN.

DOES IT GIVE YOU COMFORT?

ON IMPLOSION LIKE THAT, THAT

THEY WEREN'T IN THERE FOR DAYS

SUFFERING AND FREEZING?

MY EXPECTATION IS THAT AT

THAT PRESSURE THIS WOULD HAVE

BEEN AN INSTANTANEOUS FAILURE,

THEY PROBABLY NEVER EVEN

REALIZED SOMETHING THAT WAS

AMISS. AND THEN THEY WERE GONE.

AND THEN THEY WERE GONE.

AND FOR ME, WHEN WE WERE AT SEA,

THAT'S WHAT WE WANTED IF WE

WERE GOING TO GO DOWN.

SITTING ON THE BOTTOM FOR FIVE

DAYS, SLOWLY ASPHYXIATING

YOURSELF AND DYING OF CARBON

DIOXIDE POISONING?

THAT IS MUCH, MUCH WORSE.

 JOSH, WHAT DO YOU SAY?

 I ECHO THAT, I CERTAINLY DO

THINK THAT IT IS STARTING TO

LOOK LIKE A MASSIVE,

CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT

HAPPEN ON THE WAY DOWN.

AND IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEN

IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED

EXTREMELY QUICKLY.

THE KIND OF PRESSURE THAT WE

ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE IS

MONUMENTAL.

AND LOOK, PERSONALLY I KNOW TWO

OF THE PASSENGERS ABOARD.

I KNEW STOCKTON RUSH AND I KNEW

THE HARDENING FROM THE

EXPLORERS CLUB.

THIS IS SUCH A SITUATION.

AND AS I SAID A FEW TIMES,

ALREADY TODAY, I REALLY DO HAVE

A GREAT AMOUNT OF ADMIRATION

FOR THE PASSENGERS ABOARD.

AS ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN IN A

SUBMERSIBLE CAN TELL YOU, IT

TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE, A LOT

OF THE TREPIDATION.

WHETHER IT IS ON TITAN OR ANY

OTHER PLATFORM.

AS A CIVILIAN TO GO DOWN AND GO

TO THE STEPS, AND TAKE ON A

MISSION LIKE THIS.

SO MY HEART REALLY BREAKS FOR

THEM, AND FOR THEIR FAMILIES.

I THINK THAT WE SHOULD HAVE A

LOT OF ADMIRATION AND RESPECT

FOR THEM TAKING ON SOMETHING

LIKE THIS.

WHICH IS NOT EASY TO DO.

JOSH YOU DO REALLY DANGEROUS

THINGS LIKE THIS FOR A LIVING.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK,

DO YOU THINK IT'S GOING TO

IMPACT THE DECISIONS THAT YOU

AND YOU HAVE TO JUDGE RISK

AGAINST REWARD.

YOU HAVE TO JUDGE IT AGAINST

THE KIND OF RISK YOU'RE ABLE TO

TAKE ON AS AN INDIVIDUAL.

I THINK THAT THE TITANIC AS A

DESTINATION, AS AN IDEA EVEN,

IS JUST INCREDIBLY MEANINGFUL

FOR SOME PEOPLE.

CERTAINLY, THE PERSON WHO WAS

ABOARD WAS ONE OF THE FOREMOST

EXPERTS.

SOMETHING HE WAS INCREDIBLY

PASSIONATE ABOUT.

SO PEOPLE WHO CLIMB MOUNTAINS

PEOPLE WHO JUMP OUT OF

AIRPLANES.

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO DOWN TO

SEE TITANIC.

AND I DON'T BEGRUDGE ANY OF

THEM THEIR PASSIONS.

I THINK THAT FOR ME, AS FOR

ANYONE, IF THERE IS SOMETHING

THAT YOU REALLY FEEL IS A

MEANINGFUL THANK.

YOU WEIGH OUT THAT RISK WITH

THE REWARD.

FOR ME WITH TIGHTEN, I JUST

COULDN'T GET COMFORTABLE WITH

IT BECAUSE I DID NOT FEEL AS

THOUGH THE RISK COULD EVEN BE

EVALUATED.

AND I THINK THAT THERE IS SOME

BIG QUESTIONS HERE ABOUT THE

DESIGN OF THIS HULL, THE

MANUFACTURING OF THIS HULL, AND

I THINK THAT WE'RE GONNA HAVE

TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS IN THE

COMING WEEKS.
