"Skillshare" is the name given to a community of online students gathered in the United States to review and distribute videos covering a range of subjects.Though the courses are not nationally recognized, a membership is required to get access to them and is thus expensive.Conversely, although some courses address business and entrepreneurship, the great bulk of programs are focused on artistic activities.

The course covers a lot of material mostly on group projects, and the main goal is to get fresh information by finishing an assignment.

Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong started Skillshare in New York City in November of 2010. The creators of the learning platform were Since then, in April of 2011, the website has been constantly available for site visitors.

Karnjanaprakorn has experience in social media; he oversaw the product team of Hot Potato, a company Twitter eventually acquired. Twitter has bought Hot Potato. During his employment at OMGPop, Ong performed the function of a product manager.Skillshare raised $3.1 million after finishing a Series A investment round in August of 2011. During that time, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures provided the firm most of its capital.

By the time 2013 drew to an end, Skillshare had raised $6 million overall; by February of the next year, the business had raised $4.65 million. The two companies in charge of fundraising were specifically Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures. The whole sum given was ten million dollars.

Organized by Skillshare, Penny Conference was a one-day event set for April of 2012. The conference aimed to look at the present educational system and strategies for improvement. Among the many eminent speakers at the conference were Michael Karnjanaprakorn, co-founder of Codecademy, Zach Sims—who co-founded the initiative Pencils of Promise—and Adam Braun, the creator of the program.

To effectively finish the final assignment for every one of the fifteen fifteen online courses started on Skillshare in August 2012, students were obliged to collaborate. Over 250 students had previously been taught at the School of Design by the time November 2013 came.

Work between Skillshare and Levi's produced the School of MakeOurMark when it opened in October 2013. Through courses in drawing, tattooing, and photography among other creative expressions, this educational platform gives its users the chance to convey their individuality.

Skillshare debuted its membership service in 2014's March, and now it charges $9.95 a month.Early in that year's fall, the firm announced a new open platform wherein anybody could register as a course teacher. Customers would also be able to register for a free membership, which would provide monthly access to a small set of course materials.

Skillshare had success in obtaining a Series B investment of twelve million United States Dollars in May 2015.Through Series C financing in July 2018, the firm was able to effectively raise $28 million more. Venture funding accounted for eight million dollars; equity investments brought thirty million dollars.

Introduced in March of 2017, the "Groups" feature lets users of the website engage with other creators.

Skillshare announced in September 2021 that it would no longer be offering free lessons to users. Conversely, the platform made it such that customers had to either register for a premium membership or try out the service for free before they could access any of the courses, including the ones that had been given for free in the past.
