Gaza and Israel War: Conflict, Humanitarian Crisis, and Political Reality

The war between Gaza and Israel is one of the most prolonged and complex conflicts in the Middle East. It is not merely a clash between two territories or political factions, but rather a deep-rooted crisis involving religion, history, occupation, and violations of human rights. The Gaza Strip is a small part of the Palestinian territory, covering only 365 square kilometers, but home to nearly 2 million people. It is currently governed by the Islamist group Hamas. Since Hamas took power in Gaza in 2007, Israel has imposed a full blockade—by land, sea, and air. This blockade, along with Hamas’s resistance movement, has led to frequent armed clashes between Gaza and Israel.

Major escalations in the conflict occurred in 2008, 2012, 2014, and more recently in 2021 and 2023. Each time, the causes include rocket attacks, tensions in Jerusalem, or Israeli operations against Palestinians. Israel claims that Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group fire rockets at civilian areas in Israel to spread terror; on the other hand, Hamas states that it acts in self-defense and to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people. In each of these conflicts, it is the ordinary people of Gaza who suffer the most.

Israel’s warfare strategy is highly advanced and technology-based. They carry out airstrikes using drones and fighter jets on various targets in Gaza. While Israel claims these strikes target only Hamas military bases, weapons depots, and tunnels, the reality is that schools, hospitals, and residential buildings are also destroyed, resulting in the deaths of numerous women and children. International human rights organizations and the United Nations have labeled these attacks as “excessive use of force” and violations of international human rights laws.

While Israel labels Gaza as a “terrorist stronghold,” Palestinians see it as the center of their resistance. Armed factions of Hamas, such as the Al-Qassam Brigades, organize resistance against Israeli aggression. They use underground tunnels for movement and attempt attacks inside Israeli territory. In response, Israel frequently conducts ground operations to destroy these tunnels, which often results in widespread bloodshed.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza in 2023 was one of the most devastating. Within weeks, thousands of bombs were dropped, destroying entire neighborhoods. Schools, hospitals, generators, and power systems collapsed. Humanitarian aid could not reach the affected areas. Due to the blockade, the UN and other aid organizations were unable to deliver essential supplies, causing severe shortages of food, water, and medicine. Children are growing up in malnutrition, trauma, and constant insecurity. People around the world have been outraged witnessing Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe.

This war is not just a military conflict—it is a humanitarian disaster. The people of Gaza have been living under blockade for years. They cannot travel freely, lack adequate healthcare and education, and face no real development or job opportunities. The youth are frustrated, and many are driven to extremism out of hopelessness. Israel’s method of suppressing terrorism only fuels more hatred and desire for revenge.

Although the international community has repeatedly attempted to mediate ceasefires, a lasting solution remains elusive. Both Israel and Hamas remain steadfast in their respective positions. Many analysts believe the root of the conflict lies in the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and the continued denial of Palestinians’ legitimate rights. Without recognizing the right of Palestinians to form an independent state, granting them access to Jerusalem, halting settlement expansions, and lifting the Gaza blockade, peace cannot be achieve. It between Gaza and Israel is a deeply political, religious, and humanitarian crisis. Resolving it requires sincere diplomatic efforts, international pressure, and solutions based on justice and fairness. Until the legitimate rights of Palestinians are recognized, this war will not end. Perhaps one day, the morning will come when children in Gaza wake up not to the sound of bombs, but to the chirping of birds. But before that, the world must act with truth, equality, and compassion.
