Birth

570 CE: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in this year. His father, Abdullah, passed away the same year, while the Prophet was still in his mother’s womb. According to most accounts, he was born on August 29 or the 9th of Rabi' al-Awwal, although some believe it to be the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal. There are differences of opinion regarding the exact date. Seven days after his birth, his naming and ‘aqiqah (a traditional sacrifice) ceremony was held. After his birth, he was breastfed by Suwaybah, a servant of his uncle Abu Lahab. The responsibility for raising him was given to Halimah. When the Prophet was two years old, he was returned to his mother, Amina, but due to a plague in Mecca, he was sent back again to his foster mother, Halimah.

The Splitting of the Chest

574 CE: When the Prophet was four years old, the first incident of the splitting of the chest (Shaqq al-Sadr) occurred while he was under the care of Halimah.

580 CE: When he was ten years old, the second incident of the splitting of the chest took place.

Marriage to Khadijah (RA)

At the age of 25, in the year 595 CE, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) married Khadijah al-Kubra (RA), who is honored with the title Ummul Mu'mineen (Mother of the Believers). Their first acquaintance took place when the Prophet was 23 years old and Khadijah, a wealthy merchant of Mecca, entrusted him with managing her business after witnessing his honesty and trustworthiness.

Following the Prophet’s receipt of prophethood, Khadijah (RA) was the first person to accept Islam. At the time of their marriage, she was 40 years old. They shared a marriage of approximately 15 years. Khadijah (RA) was the Prophet’s first wife and is widely known and respected by the name Bibi Khadijah. She was a noble woman who, during her lifetime, received glad tidings of Paradise and its fragrance.

Before marrying the Prophet, Khadijah (RA) was a wealthy widow and successful businesswoman. Deeply impressed by the Prophet’s noble character, she proposed marriage to him, which he accepted. Due to her purity and noble character, she was given the title Tahira (the Pure One).
