Prince Karim Aga Khan, the billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, has passed away at the age of 88. His charity, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), announced that he died peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family.

The Aga Khan was the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, who trace their lineage back to the Prophet Muhammad. Born in Switzerland, Prince Karim Aga Khan held British citizenship and spent much of his life in France.
