Following Krishna’s advice to defeat Jarasandha before the Rajasuya Yajna, Bhima, along with Krishna and Arjuna, journeyed to the kingdom of Magadha. Their mission was to end Jarasandha’s reign, liberate the imprisoned kings, and secure peace for Yudhishthira’s rule. Jarasandha, the formidable king of Magadha, was known for his immense strength and had captured nearly a hundred kings, intending to sacrifice them in a ritual for Lord Shiva. Krishna, aware of Jarasandha’s unusual birth and his unique vulnerability, devised a plan for Bhima to challenge and ultimately defeat him.

The Arrival in Magadha

Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna arrived in Magadha disguised as Brahmins. Knowing Jarasandha was a devout follower of the custom of hospitality, Krishna was confident he would honor their request. They entered his court as guests, and Jarasandha, bound by his duties as a king, warmly welcomed them.

After observing them closely, however, Jarasandha sensed something unusual. These “Brahmins” possessed the strength and bearing of warriors rather than ascetics. He voiced his suspicions, demanding to know their true purpose. Krishna then revealed their identities and openly challenged Jarasandha, explaining that they had come to end his tyranny. He invited Jarasandha to a fair, one-on-one combat with any one of them.

Jarasandha, being a fierce and proud warrior, accepted the challenge eagerly. He chose to fight Bhima, as he considered him the worthiest opponent. The two warriors, equally matched in strength and skill, prepared for a grueling duel.

The Fierce Battle Between Bhima and Jarasandha

The duel between Bhima and Jarasandha was an epic clash of strength and endurance. They fought hand-to-hand, wrestling each other with incredible force, while Krishna and Arjuna observed from a distance. Their duel lasted for days, with neither willing to give up or show any sign of weakness. The ground beneath them trembled as they struck each other, each attack shaking the earth.

Despite being well-matched, Bhima struggled to gain the upper hand, as Jarasandha seemed capable of recovering quickly from every blow. The two warriors grappled, lifted, and threw each other, each attempting to overpower the other. The onlookers, including Krishna and Arjuna, were awed by the sheer display of power and resilience.

Krishna’s Guidance and the Revelation of Jarasandha’s Weakness

As the battle wore on, Krishna noticed that Bhima was beginning to tire. He realized that the only way for Bhima to defeat Jarasandha was to exploit the unique weakness that Krishna had previously revealed to him. Due to Jarasandha’s unusual birth, his body had been fused together from two halves, and this vulnerability could be his downfall.

Krishna subtly conveyed this message to Bhima by taking a twig and splitting it into two halves. He then threw the halves in opposite directions, signaling Bhima to tear Jarasandha’s body apart in the same manner. Bhima understood Krishna’s hint, and with renewed vigor, he continued his attack.

In a sudden move, Bhima lifted Jarasandha off the ground, using all his strength. Summoning his resolve, Bhima grasped Jarasandha by the legs, split his body into two halves, and threw each half in opposite directions. Due to his unique birth, Jarasandha’s body could not rejoin, and he perished instantly.

The Death of Jarasandha and Liberation of the Kings

With Jarasandha’s death, Magadha was liberated from his oppressive rule. The tyrant’s defeat marked a pivotal moment for the kingdom, which had long been under his reign of terror. Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna freed the imprisoned kings who had been held captive, waiting to be sacrificed by Jarasandha. The grateful kings, once liberated, expressed their deep gratitude to the Pandavas, vowing to support Yudhishthira in his quest to establish a just rule over Bharatavarsha.

Return to Indraprastha and the Path to the Rajasuya Yajna

With the powerful Jarasandha defeated and Magadha freed, Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna returned triumphantly to Indraprastha. They reported their success to Yudhishthira, who was elated at the victory. Jarasandha’s death cleared the path for Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya Yajna, as there were now no formidable rulers left to oppose his claim to the title of Emperor.

Jarasandha’s defeat was not only a triumph of physical strength but also a testament to the importance of strategy, resilience, and unity. The story of Bhima’s duel with Jarasandha became legendary, a symbol of courage and the power of righteousness to prevail over tyranny. The Pandavas’ journey toward the Rajasuya Yajna continued, bringing them one step closer to fulfilling their destiny in the epic saga of the *Mahabharata*.
