Over the past fifty years, Bangladesh has gone through a complex and often turbulent journey. The country has repeatedly faced challenges such as political instability, military coups, natural disasters and climate change. However, despite the many adversities, Bangladesh has made incredible progress in development, poverty reduction and disaster management.

Political instability and military coups

Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 through a bloody war of liberation. At its inception, the country was devastated—millions of people were displaced and the economy was fragile. The Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh. However, his leadership faced many problems—political chaos, economic crisis and allegations of authoritarian rule.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family were killed in a tragic coup in 1975. This was followed by a period of military coups and political chaos that lasted until the 1980s. Ziaur Rahman and later Hussain Muhammad Ershad ruled the country through military rule.

In the 1990s, Ershad was overthrown by a mass movement and democratic rule was re-established. However, intense political conflict, strikes, violence, and allegations of corruption between the Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) hindered political stability.

Economic progress and limitations

Despite political instability, Bangladesh achieved significant economic progress. The ready-made garment industry became a major export sector for Bangladesh in the international market, employing millions of women workers, which played a role in economic and social transformation.

Remittances from expatriates also contributed significantly to the country's economy. Developments in education, health, and infrastructure lifted millions of people out of poverty. According to the World Bank, the poverty rate fell from more than 40% in the 1990s to around 20% in the 2020s.

However, this development has been uneven. Income inequality, labor rights crises, and factory safety issues (especially after the 2013 Rana Plaza disaster) remain significant challenges.

Climate change: a long-term threat

One of Bangladesh’s biggest long-term threats is climate change. Located in the deltas of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural disaster risks—floods, cyclones, erosion, and sea level rise are regular threats.

Millions of people have been affected by many natural disasters, including the 1991 cyclone. However, Bangladesh has made great strides in disaster management—with cyclone shelters, early warnings, and increased local preparedness, the loss of life has been greatly reduced.

Yet the climate crisis continues. Salinity in coastal areas is increasing, agricultural production is declining, water shortages and health risks are increasing. Major cities, including the capital Dhaka, are suffocating under the pressure of waterlogging, pollution and unplanned urbanization.

A tolerant nation

Although the history of Bangladesh is one of sorrow and pain, it is also the story of a tolerant nation. The country is today walking on the path of development after overcoming wars, military rule and natural disasters. Bangladesh's success in economic progress, disaster management and women's empowerment is appreciated worldwide.

However, there is still a long way to go. Strengthening democratic institutions, bridging political divides and taking effective action against climate change are the demands of the hour. Learning from past experiences, Bangladesh can move towards more stable, equitable and sustainable development in the future.
