A Detective Mystery Concerning Eleanor Graves

Chapter 1: An Unusual Morning

Comfort had always been a feature of the Morning Café. Locals who want the comfort of freshly made coffee and the familiarity of routine frequented this little store, which was hidden away on Maple Street.

Eleanor Graves, the detective, liked routine. She had a black coffee, no sugar, and a blueberry muffin every morning at 7:15 AM. As the city awoke around her, she read the newspaper at her customary corner table.

However, the café was quiet today. Hushed whispers and nervous looks took the place of the buzz of discussion.

Then she noticed it.

A man was slumped over his table at the window seat. The foam in his cappuccino dissolved as it sat untouched. Beside the cup was a ripped-open packet of sugar.

Eleanor's intuition sparked. In a café, a dead man? This morning was not like any other.

Chapter 2: The Victim

Pushing through the crowd, she quickly identified the victim.

Henshaw, Charles.

Charles was an ordinary man in his late fifties, decently clothed. Every day at 7:30 AM, he came in, got the same coffee, and sat by the window to observe the world.

The proprietor of the café, Mrs. Martinez, appeared pale. "Detective, I—I just discovered him in this state."

Leaning down, Eleanor put two fingers to his neck. No heartbeat. chilly skin.

She glanced at his right hand, which was holding something. She gently pryed open his fingers and took out a tiny, crumpled piece of paper.

"It is too late. They are aware.

Her stomach grew constricted. This death was not a natural one. It was a message.

Chapter 3: The Initial Hint

Eleanor looked around at the table.

Not much touched his cappuccino. An empty, ripped-open sugar packet sat next to it.

It felt wrong in some way.

She sniffed—almond—and took it up.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

She looked at the customers in the café. "Who witnessed him stealing the sugar?"

Then a college student named Lisa raised her voice. "I believe he got it from someone."

Eleanor squinted her eyes.

Lisa paused. A woman with blond hair. After a minute of sitting with him, she departed.

Eleanor had a racing mind. This woman was who? Why would she contaminate Charles?

The Security Footage in Chapter Four

Eleanor followed Mrs. Martinez to the back room, where the security cameras were kept.

The video was fast-forwarded to 7:28 AM by Eleanor.

Charles was there, walking into the café and settling in. A blond woman wearing sunglasses entered a minute later.

Charles was seated across from her. They had a quick conversation.

She handed him the packet of sugar at 7:32 a.m. by reaching across the table.

She departed at 7:35 AM.

Charles took a sip around 7:40 a.m.

He was dead at 7:42 AM.

Eleanor stopped the video and panned in.

She gasped. This woman was someone she knew.

Vance, Jessica.

Jessica, a former journalist, had been looking into a significant corporate corruption case.

Charles, too? Her informant had been him.

Chapter 5: A Perilous Reality

Eleanor wasted no time. For Jessica Vance, she issued an APB. She would not get very far if she was behind this.

They found her in a motel outside of town in a matter of hours.

Expecting a fight, Eleanor came with backup.

Jessica did not run, though.

She sat looking at the floor from the edge of the motel bed.

"You were quick," she whispered.

Eleanor's hand was still in her holster. "You gave Charles Henshaw poison."

Jessica laughed bitterly. "Do you believe I did this?"

Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "We have video of you giving him the package of sugar."

Jessica raised her head. "So, why am I still here?"

Eleanor hesitated. "What do you mean?"

Jessica let out a breath. "It must have been switched."

Chapter Six: The Actual Murderers

Eleanor had a racing mind. Changed it?

Jessica bent over. "Charles and I were collaborating. A billion-dollar company may be destroyed by the proof he was about to reveal. However, he called me two days ago in fear. "They know," he said. It is too late.

Eleanor was cold.

Jessica went on. "To persuade him not to back out, I met with him this morning. He was already tense, though. He was all right when I left. I promise.

Eleanor looked at her. Jessica was an amazing actress, if she were telling the truth.

"Who are 'they'?" Eleanor inquired.

Jessica lowered her voice. "Argon Industries."

Eleanor tensed.

Among the most influential businesses in the nation was Argon Industries. A tech company with strong political connections.

This was not merely murder if they had slain Charles.

This constituted a cover-up.

Chapter 7: A Serious Caution

With her head whirling, Eleanor departed the motel.

Charles had been slain because he knew too much, if Jessica was telling the truth.

She researched Charles's past when she got back to the station.

He had put $100,000 into a covert offshore account two weeks prior. A bribe? Or hush money?

She looked through his phone logs. blocked phone numbers. unknown callers.

Then, at 6:58 AM, I got one last text.

UNKNOWN: "Come to the café with me. Final opportunity.

Eleanor's heart pounded. This was not the end of it.

Chapter 8: A Time-Based Race

That night, she did not sleep.

She obtained enough proof by morning to prove that Charles had been under surveillance by Argon Industries.

However, before she could do anything—

Her cell rang.

An unidentified message.

Detective, stay out of this. Or you will be the next.

Eleanor gripped her coffee cup tightly.

Around her, the Morning Café bustled, unaware of the impending storm.

Charles had passed away. Jessica was being held.

The actual murderers, though?

It is still out there.

They were now observing her.
