15 most weirdest wedding rituals
most scary wedding rituals

Weddings are a beautiful celebration of
love, but some cultures have unique
rituals and traditions that are outright
bizarre and will definitely appear
strange to every Outsider.
Join me as we
have a look at 15 of the most weirdest,
wedding rituals and traditions from
around the world number 15.
15. Cambodia
let's take a quick journey to Cambodia a
country in Southeast Asia, to uncover one
of the quirkiest and weirdest wedding
rituals.
Practiced by the krung tribe the,
krung tribe is just one of the many
tribes of Cambodia that have unique
wedding traditions but theirs is
slightly different from anything you may
have heard of, when a young woman from
the tribe reaches the age of marriage.
Her father then has the obligation to
build her a special cabin in the middle
of the Jungle, but this cabin is not just
any old cabin that's built with logs
it's a cabin of love where the young
woman can have as many suitors as she
wishes until she finds the one who makes
her heart sing.
That's right in the croon
tribe multiple dating is not only
allowed but it's also encouraged the
cabin is built to give the young woman a
private space ,to explore her romantic
options and then make her choice once
the young woman chooses her preferred
Suitor he has no choice but to accept
her proposal and then become her husband.
But wait it gets even more weird
according to tradition the husband is
not allowed to spend the night with his
new wife until he's paid her father with
a certain number of cows that's right.
Cows as in livestock The More Cows that
he can produce ,the more nights that he
gets to spend with his wife now you may
wonder what happens if the husband
cannot afford to pay the bride price for
cows well.
According to the tradition, the
couple cannot live together until he has
paid the price in full although this
tradition may seem odd to all of us,
It's
a beautiful and essential part of the
tribe's culture and tradition it's
fascinating to see how this practice has
survived for centuries and is still
relevant to them today.
14. South China
we now head to South China but be warned,
this tradition is not for the faint of
heart before the wedding preparations
can commence.
The couple must seek
natural approval but how do they do this
well,
get ready for some serious Gore because
it involves a little bit of chicken
sacrifice both the bride and the groom
hold a chicken in one hand and perform a
ceremony where they sacrifice the poor
bird and then remove its liver if the
liver is in good condition then it is
considered a good omen and they can then
move forward with their wedding plans.
However if not they'll need to try
another time this tradition may seem
strange and barbaric to some but it is
deeply rooted in the Chinese culture.
It's said to bring good luck and
prosperity to the couple's marriage it's
also a way of showing respect to Nature,
and asking for its blessing on the
couple's Union but what happens to that
sacrifice chicken you may ask well in
some regions of South China.
The chicken is then cooked and served as part of the
wedding Feast talk about Farm to Table,
it's interesting to note that this
tradition has been around for centuries
and it just goes to show how unique and
diverse that wedding traditions can be
all around the world.
13.Mauritania.
Mauritania we now take a break from
exploring the fascinating customs of
Asia, and head to Mauritania a small But
Mighty country in Africa.
Where the locals have a unique perspective on what
makes a bride beautifu,l in many parts of
the world the prevailing belief is that
a thin and athletic body is the epitome
of female Beauty.
However, in certain
parts of Mauritania the opposite holds
true there people believe that women who
are on the heavier side represent
fertility and abundance and are,
therefore more desirable as brides so if
a mauritanian bride is deemed too thin
by her groom or family she's expected to
pack on the pounds before the wedding
day .
In fact it's common for a bride to
consume copious amounts of food and
drink during the weeks that lead up to
the big day in order to ensure that,
she's sufficiently plump and curvy now
you might be wondering how this
tradition came about in the first place.
Some say that it dates back centuries to
a time when food was scarce, in
Mauritania and being overweight was a
sign of wealth and Status others believe
that it's rooted in the idea that a more
full figure represents good health and
vitality making a heavier bride more
likely to Bear healthy children of
course.
It is worth noting that this
tradition has come under criticism in
recent years, with some activists calling
it out for promoting unhealthy eating
habits and body shaming.
It's important to remember that every culture has its
own customs and beliefs but that doesn't
mean that we can't question them and
strive to do better.
12. Born
Now if you haven't
heard of Borneo you shouldn't frap,
because you're not alone this giant
Island is located in Southeast Asia and
it belongs to three different countries
Indonesia ,Malaysia and Brunei in the
city of sadan.
Which is divided between
Indonesia and Malaysia there's an
unusual custom that all couples must
respect ,if at least one of them
practices and maintains the traditions
of their ancestors but what is this
tradition that is so peculiar well the
locals believe that going to the
bathroom to do a number two is bad luck
for the fertility of the couple.
Therefore, the couple is forbidden to go
to the bathroom to do number two for
three days before their wedding ceremony.
Yes you heard that correctly three days
before the wedding they cannot go to the
bathroom to comply with this custom the
couple must maintain a specific diet
days before the wedding, which is not
only strange but also quite challenging
and to make sure that the cup couple
does not cheat a person is assigned to
watch over them to ensure that the
ceremony is fulfilled .
Now you may be
thinking why on Earth would anyone
follow such a bizarre custom well to the
people of this area the tradition is a
sacred practice ,that has been passed
down from generation to generation and
it's taken quite seriously.
11.South Korea
South Korea picture this it's the day of
your wedding and you're feeling a
mixture of excitement and nerves, you're
dressed in your most fine attire
standing in front of your family and
friends and waiting for your bride to be
to make her grand entrance.
But before you can exchange your vows, there's one
tradition that you have to follow and
it's not for the faint of heart in this
South Korean tradition only the men
participate and it's designed to prove
the groom's virility on the wedding day.
A relative which is usually an older
male will then take off their shoe and
hit the soles of the groom's feet ,with a
fish that's right a fish as if that's
not strange enough while it's happening.
The relative has to ask the groom about
his future plans and it's not just any
old smelly fish that's used ,it's
actually a live flounder .
Which is believed to symbolize fertility in their
culture ,now you may be thinking what's
the point of it all well the idea is
that if the groom can withstand the pain
of the fish hitting his feet he's then
considered to be strong enough to handle
the challenges of his married life.
It's a test of endurance ,and it's not for the
faint of heart just imagine being in the
groom shoes quite literally as your feet
are getting whacked with a fish, the pain
must be excruciating and it's not really
something that you would forget in a
hurry.
While this tradition is
undoubtedly bizarre, it still practiced
in some regions of South Korea.
Today failing to pass this test could mean to
become the shame of the family which
would be an incredibly humiliating
experience.
10 breaking the Crockery
it may sound like something out of a
comedy sketch, but breaking the Crockery
is actually a long-standing Superstition.
That is still practiced today the night
before the wedding, the families of the
bride and groom gather outside of the
bride's house carrying dishes of all
shapes and sizes the engaged couple is
presented with the dishes which they
then proceed to smash on the ground.
shattering them into a million pieces
but wait why on Earth would anyone do
this well it turns out that the noise
that's created by the shattered dishes,
is believed to scare away any evil
spirits that may be lurking around .
Also ensuring that the marriage begins on the
right foot plus the act of breaking
something also symbolizes the couple
leaving behind any negative energies,
from their past and then beginning anew.
Now you might be wondering why it is
Crockery specifically well rumor has it
that back in the day Crockery was
actually considered a luxury item, so
breaking it was a way of showing that
the family had enough wealth to afford.
Such extravagancy these days however,
it's more about symbolism, than anything
else and it's hard to deny that breaking
the Crockery is one of the more bizarre
wedding traditions out there but if it
brings the couple some good fortune and
scares off any evil spirits.
Then who are we all to judge at the end of the day,
love is love and if smashing plates is
part of the celebration then we should
be all for it.
9. China
As we know, China is a
country that takes great care in
preserving their Traditions. Many of
which have been around for hundreds, if
not thousands of years and when it comes
to weddings there are plenty of strange
Customs to be found but one stands out
as a particularly odd one.
In this tradition only the bride participates,
but luckily it doesn't involve any kind
of physical pain .
The bride-to-be is then
required to cry for at least once every
day for an entire month leading up to
the wedding and I'm not just talking
about a few tears and a pout the crying
has to be full-on sobbing and wailing.
But that's not all after the first 10
days the bride's mother then has to join
in on the daily crying session and then
after another 10 days have passed the
bride's grandmother will also get in on
the act when the big day finally arrives,
all of the wedding guests are expected
to arrive and then shed a few tears of
their own and if they don't it's
considered a great lack of respect for
the couple their families and the other
guests and it's a strange tradition to
be sure, but it's just one example of how
different cultures celebrate the joining
of two people in marriage.
So the next time you attend a wedding, just remember
some traditions may seem a little
strange but they all have a special
meaning behind them.
8. Bali
Now imagine this,
you're about to tie the knot with the
love of your life and you're feeling
pretty excited but suddenly someone
comes up to you with a pair of pliers
and asks you to open your mouth .
What in the world could be going on you may ask.
well in Bali it's tradition to pull out
one of your teeth as part of your
wedding ceremony .
Yes you heard that
right a perfectly healthy tooth is
plucked out of your mouth and it's all
in the name of spiritual growth, the
Balinese culture has a tradition in
which teeth are seen as symbols of
negative traits like lust and greed and
anger and jealousy and by removing one
tooth the bride and groom are believed
to be releasing themselves from these
qualities and then moving on to a more
positive and pure future together.
But don't worry it's not as gruesome as it
sounds, trained professionals carry out
the tooth extraction and they make sure
that the process becomes as painless and
safe.
As possible and some people even
believe that it brings good luck to the
newlyweds that's not all.
Balinese weddings are a whole other level of
vibrant and colorful the ceremony
involves offerings of fruit flowers and
rice to the gods and the couple is
adorned in traditional Balinese dress
the atmosphere is electric and the
guests are encouraged to dance and
celebrate the joyous occasion.
So if you're ever invited to a Balinese
wedding brace yourself for the tooth
pulling ceremony ,but also get ready to
immerse yourself in a culture that is
full of color energy and tradition.
7. spitting on the bride up in Tanzania
next is a wedding ritual that might make
you squirm in your seat I'm talking
about the spitting tradition that is
practiced by certain tribes in Tanzania
and Kenya.
During this ritual the Father
of the Bride has a very unique role to
play, he has to bless his daughter's new
life by spitting on her head and breasts
during the wedding ceremony while it
might sound disgusting.
The ritual has a deep significance for all of those who
practice it the father's saliva is
believed to bring good luck ward off
evil spirits and protect the couple from
harm, it's also a way for the father to
show his love and support for his
daughter's new journey in life .
The saliva is collected in the father's
mouth before being released onto his
daughter's head and breast and the bride
dressed in her finest wedding attire,
then stands patiently and receives this
blessing from her father.
As odd as it may seem the spitting
tradition is an important part of these
cultures and a testament to their
commitment to preserving their
Traditions ,it's also worth noting that
the ritual is reserved for the bride.
Only so the Grooms can breathe a sigh of
relief now let's be honest this is not
exactly the most Pleasant wedding
tradition out there ,but it may even make
you grateful for the simple bouquet toss
at your cousin's wedding however it is
important to remember that what seems
weird to one culture may be totally
normal for another .
If you're planning a
wedding and want to add a little twist
to your ceremony you might want to think
twice before incorporating this
particular custom, but who knows maybe a
little saliva will bring you all the
luck that you need in your new life
together .
6.Sweden
And here's
another wedding tradition that will
leave you scratching your head, but
what's even more shocking this tradition
is common to distinct countries like
Sweden and the Himalayas .
Let's begin in Sweden where they have a tradition,
involving a certain resemblance to a pig
now before you start picturing people
dressed in pig costumes or even marrying
pigs, allow me to explain the tradition
involves a cake in the shape of a pig
that is served during the wedding
reception .
The cake is usually made of
marzipan and is decorated to look like a
pig it may sound strange but it's
actually quite common in Sweden and it's
believed to bring good luck to the
newlyweds.
Now we'll move on to the,
Himalayas where things get a bit more
crazy there's a tradition in some parts
of the Himalayas that involves the groom
proving his love and Devotion to his
bride by performing a dangerous and
life-threatening feat .
This can range from climbing a steep Mountain to
crossing a raging River and it's a way
for the groom to show his courage and
strength, but to also prove to his bride
that he's willing to do anything for her
luckily not all traditions in the
Himalayas reach that level of craziness.
In fact one other tradition that is very
popular in that region is the one of the
kiss but it's not just any kiss that's
between the groom and the bride, in fact
any guest has the opportunity to kiss
either the bride or the groom during the
ceremony custom.
Says that during the
ceremony the groom must disappear for a
few moments for any reason and meanwhile
all the young people who are not married
are allowed to give him or her a kiss.
The same happens for the bride when she
leaves the room and it certainly seems
like a more healthy tradition, than the
one in the Himalayas but it's still
strange that one of the partners allows
the others to go and kiss all of their
friends at the moment of their marriage.
would you be so comfortable with your
partner kissing all of your friends?
5.Kyrgyzstan
Have you ever heard of marriage by capture well,
it's a practice that involves a man
capturing the woman he wants to marry
and then taking her away to his family's
home and while it may sound like
something out of a medieval fairy tale.
This tradition has been practiced for
thousands of years across the world one
country that still holds on to this
bizarre custom is Kyrgyzstan, in fact in
their culture the groom's family must
steal the bride from her family's home
before the wedding ceremony can even
take place.
It's like a real-life game of
hide and seek but instead of tagging the
groom has to capture the bride and whisk
her away but why would anyone want to be captured on their wedding day.
Well in Kyrgyzstan it's believed that the tears
that are shed by the bride on her
wedding day will bring happiness to the
marriage and in the past ,some parents
have believed that their daughters would
only get married if they were captured
by a man.
However, in 1991 the government
would make this practice illegal as it
was deemed to be a violation of women's
rights and while the tradition still
persists in some areas, it's now more of
a symbolic gesture rather than an actual
kidnapping.
So if you ever find yourself
in Kyrgyzstan don't be surprised if you
witness a groom's family running around
trying to capture the bride it's a weird
and wonderful tradition that has stood
the test of time, and while it's not for
everyone it's certainly a unique way to
begin a marriage .
4. two wedding attendants in Africa
Picture this you're at a wedding in
Africa the ceremony has been lovely the
bride and groom are glowing and
everything seems to be perfect ,but then
as the happy couple heads off to their
honeymoon suite something quite
unexpected happens .
An older woman and an
older man whom you've never seen before
then step forward and follow them up to
their room now you might be thinking
what's going on here ,well get this these
two attendants who are usually a village
Elder and the mother of the bride or
groom are going to spend the first night
with the newlyweds that's right you
heard me correctly .
The attendants are
going to pass the first married night
together with the bride and groom and
before you begin thinking that this is
some kind of weird cult thing there's
actually no concrete reason for the
tradition, it's just something that's
been passed down for generations and is
still maintained in various Villages and
towns all throughout the African
continent.
Some people might find this
tradition a bit uncomfortable but it's
important to remember that cultural
rituals can be very different from what
we're used to in our own communities, and
who knows maybe there's something to be
said for having experienced Elders
around to give the newlyweds some advice
and support
3.Scotland
This bizarre Scottish wedding tradition might make you think twice about becoming
married in Scotland, as you may know
Scotland has a rich culture and many
interesting Traditions which includes
the unique ritual that I'm about to
describe to test the endurance and
commitment of the groom.
The bride's relatives will gather and then create a concoction that's made out of milk
rotten food mud and really anything else,
they can find and they will then cover
the groom from head to toe.
In this revolting mixture the idea behind the tradition is to test the groom's
strength and his willingness to endure
difficult challenges in life ,it also
serves as a way to prove his commitment
to his future wife.
And if he can handle
this mess he can handle anything that
comes their way in the future it's like
a test of his love and Devotion to his
partner ,but the ritual does not end
there once the groom is covered in the
sticky smelly mixture he must then walk
through the streets of the village or
town with his relatives and Friends
following behind him.
They're going to do a whole lot of
cheering and making a lot of noise ,and
it's kind of like a strange and crazy
parade but with the groom is the main
attraction but what about the bride well.
She's usually kept away from the scene
until the groom has finished his ordeal,
and once he has proven his worth the
bride is allowed to approach him and see
him in all of his dirty and smelly Glory.
It's like a test of her love as well,
because if she's still willing to marry
him after seeing him in this state then
she must truly love him ,so if you're
ever invited to a Scottish wedding don't
be surprised if you witness this wild
and wacky ritual because it's all just
part of the fun.
2.the Congo
We all know that,
weddings are supposed to be a time of
joy and celebration and love but in the
Congo it's all about testing the
couple's resolve to keep a stray face
that's right the couple has to hire a
comedian to perform during their
ceremony.
But the catch with all of that
is that the couple cannot laugh even if
the comedian is making everyone else in
the room roll on the floor, it's not only
a way to tickle the guests funny bones
but it's also a test of the couple's
commitment to taking their vows
seriously.
If either of them so much as
Snickers the ceremony comes to an
immediate Halt ,and the couple is
reminded of the gravity of the situation
now that's a unique way of ensuring the
seriousness in the marriage .
But hey , the Congo is not the only place with a
unique wedding tradition we've heard of
a Scottish tradition where the groomsmen
kidnapped the bride and take her to a
secret location .
The groom then has to
find her while completing a series of
challenges that are set by the groomsmen,
and only then is he allowed to take her
hand in marriage talk about a wild goose
chase in South Korea.
It's customary for
the groom to give a pair of live ducks
or geese to his future mother-in-law all
as a way of showing his commitment to
his new family .
I'm not so sure about the
practicality of that one but it sure is
a sweet gesture in the end.
1. France
In France the bachelor
party is celebrated with unique twists,
it's known as burial of the life of
singles where the groom is tasked with
collecting all of his treasured single
life memorabilia such as photographs
Trinkets and other mementos and placing
them all in a coffin.
But wait there's more the coffin is then buried in a
secret location by the groom's friends,
but don't worry the groom is not being
sent off to the afterlife.
Just yet the ,idea is that the items are buried as a time capsule to be Unearthed a year later or whenever the couple welcomes their first child.
Imagine The Rush of
emotions when the groom is reunited with
his buried treasures, and memories this
tradition is a fun and creative way to
bid a do to the single life and Usher in
a new phase of life with your
significant other.
it's a testament to
the fact that you can still cherish your
past while moving towards your future
and so the next time that you're in
France and you may see a group of guys
burying a coffin don't be alarmed
they're just taking part in a unique and
fascinating wedding Ritual.
Which of these strange wedding rituals
and traditions did you find the most
shocking and or confusing let me know
all of your answer.
