One Secret I may never tell

Never would I have guessed that I was someone who would love some silly drama about rich kids living in New York but here I was completely enthralled with a show that depicted a high society of wealthy, pompous teenagers.

What I hated to admit once I started Gossip Girl was realizing they weren't that much different than myself. So... I basically swatted my own hand for being so judgemental. Like the famous saying says, don't judge a book by its cover, I found myself liking the characters even if some of the things that happened in the show were completely far fetched. I liked their differences and their battles that they all faced. We all know that High School was nothing like the show and not even close to what even my life was like. My childhood growing up was completely unlike the show but it was still still the allure of what it could have been like to live like that. The parties, the schools, the opportunities; it was all so appealing.

I dream of having the opportunities to go to Brown or Columbia University or even going to one of those spectacular balls. The beautiful clothes, and the best part, having the names. Like Bass, Waldorf or Van Der Woodsen, yes make believe for the show, however still a real world desire to be able to say my name and they know who I was and have that influence just about anything, I would sit and watch the show for hours while I was in college and basically was living vicariously through them. It was like they never really had to study or work hard for anything. The only character I was even remotely like was Vanessa. She worked for everything she had or wanted. She had a kind heart and the allure of that life, never changed her morals. Everyone else it made them mean and basically narcissistic. They would do anything and hurt anyone to get there. That to me was something that was a lesson the show's creators, I would like to believe, wanted to teach younger audiences that you can still be a good person and achieve the things you want through hard work and determination.

The show also had so many twists and turns. It showed real world trials and tribulations that young adults face while they navigate life. There was just enough mystery to keep watchers guessing but also made it so it wasn't too hard to follow the storyline. It didn't drag on either as it didn't last too excessively with only 6 seasons which can happen with drama tv series like that, an example being Pretty Little Liars.

But the best part of the show was the friendships it displayed. After everything they went through, they all still managed their relationships. As I navigated friendships of my own in high school and college, I found myself listening and/or learning from them. Be more forgiving and let silly comments go. Don't demand so much from someone such as their time. Respect their other friendships and relationships. Allow them to make mistakes of their own. Don't judge their choices even if you feel they are wrong. Be honest. The relationship Blair and Serena had was one of many ups, downs, but also a lot of love and history.

You asked why I loved this drama series? Say maybe instead of say Friends, That 70's Show, or How I Met your mother because they are pretty popular, well... I could go on and on or basically be short and sweet in saying that sometimes you need an escape from what is your own reality. Yes, I found myself comparing my life and finding similarities but overall, It was completely different. It was everything my life would not be. That's the whole point isn't it? To watch something unlike my own life. Isn't that why we read books? To escape and get away from it all. TV shows are no different, especially when they are based on books (wink wink).

Gosh have I rambled on, So I guess what I am getting at is, it's a guilty pleasure because I loved a show most people found annoying. I didn't care that it was unrealistic or that it was about teenagers/young adults. I even watched the show more than once and loved it just as much as the first time. This show taught me a lot of life lessons along the way because for me, watching or reading anything is about the messages behind it more than the actual entertainment, superficial storyline or even the characters.
