I know some of you guys are already sick of this topic so feel free to click off my post if this is you. I'll wait. Are the boring people gone yet? Good. I had to gather my thoughts before I wrote my serious take on this topic. First, I'm going to go on ahead and say that I am extremely biased. I have been a huge fan of Will Smith. Heck, the first single I ever bought was Parents Just Don't Understand. Also, I have NEVER been a Chris Rock fan. His voice literally gets on my nerves. I watched Everybody Hates Chris despite having to hear him narrate the show. The actors were just too good for me to ignore. I watched the documentary because hello, how could I pass up a documentary about black hair? So there's that. Now that that's out of the way.... Here's my take on it.

It Was Deserved

Chris Rock deserved that. He did a WHOLE documentary on black women and their hair. He KNEW that joke was out of line. If he would have had the sense God gave half a penny, he would have refused to do that joke. But no, he decided once again to make a black woman the butt of his jokes. There are like 50-11 other things he could have used to get laughs but naw he decided to die on the hill of making fun of black women. I guess he forgot that he was not on the Internet and that he was in person. People have gotten so used to saying whatever they want to say without repercussions, that they get surprised when they have to face the consequences of their words. The Smith Family have already been the butt of so many jokes. Why is it that we feel so comfortable picking at each other? I don't understand that.

I was shocked initially when I saw it. I couldn't believe that no one stopped Will from going up on the stage. I was even surprised to see Will using profanity. He was one of the few rappers I was allowed to listen to because he didn't use profanity in his music. After the shock wore off, I wanted to high five him. Too often black women are seen as "strong" or "masculine" and therefore not worthy of being protected. Now, yes he could have picked better ways to retaliate. However, I'm sure he has been fed up with everyone and they mama ridiculing his family. This was surely the straw that broke the camel's back.

Could Will have handled that differently? Sure he could have. He could have shot back at Chris with another joke. He could have handled it off camera or backstage. He could have told Chris to "cash him outside". However, Chris Rock embarrassed Will's wife IN PUBLIC. He ridiculed her on National television in front of their peers. So that meant that he had to be dealt with on the same stage that he used to embarrass Jada. I do understand that this is not the popular opinion. I know some of my religious friends are going to be clutching their pearls if they are still reading this.

I know some people are saying that this could have been staged. I mean it is Hollywood. If it was staged, I wouldn't be surprised.

I hope that sent a very loud message to the world. Stop picking at black women! We are worthy of protection. Find another way to get laughs. Black women are more than just everyone's workhorses. Leave our names the f out of your mouths.

I appreciate your stance. The negative response to Will Smith was way overdone. He has been a credit to the industry and a great talent. I believe we all make mistakes and i believe if he could do it again he would not slap mr rock. i have made mistakes so i get it. people who make mistakes should not be condemned and ostracized especially someone who has been an exemplary member of that group. so, everybody should quit running around like their hair is on fire. He made a mistake. To some degree understandable. the drama surrounding the incident was way overdone. thanks for your opinion.
