What We Still Need and Suffer From in Nollywood - Dakore

"...That's what really what we need."

By Jide OkonjoPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Nollywood has come a long way over the years. From a little industry that was not revered or respected by many to an international force that is putting Nigerian squarely on the map, Nollywood is one of Nigeria's greatest exports. But there are still some places that the industry is lacking and need help with especially from the government. Dakore Egbuson Akande definitely seems to think so.

Dakore Egbuson Akande is one of Nigeria's most popular actresses who has been around for a very long time and has starred in blockbuster movies and shows such as Fifty, Chief Daddy, and Castle & Castle. As a result of this, she has seen a lot and can definitely speak on what she would want to see more of and what needs improvement. During a new interview when asked where she feels Nollywood can improve and what she still wishes to see, Dakore made some very good points and pointed out some very real issues. Here's what the actress said.

Speaking during a Q&A session with Goldmyne TV, Dakore said about the government supporting Nollywood:

The Nigerian government has not really supported Nollywood enough. I'm sure they've tried but they've just not quite found the formula yet. But for me as a practitioner, I know that we suffer from a lack of structure. That's really what we need. That's the first thing. Structure in terms of residual income for actors, welfare for theatre and film professionals, you know making sure that we have proper healthcare, support. Because we really are projecting Nigeria positively to the world so we really should be supported in that way.

Speaking on what she would also like to see and what else she thinks can be done to improve the Nollywood market in Nigeria, Dakore said:

We definitely (also) need more cinemas because not enough people are being served and right now, it seems like it's a very elitist thing where it's only people living in the cities that can have access to the cinema and things that are regular and normal for everybody. So let's try and see how we can also have more cinemas in the hinterlands, in the hard to reach areas, cuz they deserve some love and entertainment too and they're willing to pay for it as well but you know, at a reasonable price point.

Well, it is in fact true that there is enough room for more cinemas in the nation. More screens would mean more revenue for creatives which would in turn lead to better movies and incentives to produce better content. Also, more cinemas would mean more people getting to watch blockbuster movies as soon as they are released instead of waiting for online links.
