What If...? Season 3

The first two seasons of What If…? Were really hit or miss. We got some interesting original characters and some fun stories but for the most part What If…? Is not living up to what it is meant for. We got like 1000 Captain Carter episodes for absolutely no reason and there have been very little actual exploration of all the possibilities of the Marvel Universe. Also Marvel has just so many characters and for some reason the writers of What If…? Seem to be completely fixated on the same 5 characters. I really hope that season 3 does a better job, but to be completely honest I don’t have a lot of confidence.

We will be judging these episode by episode and the first one we’ve got this season is What If The Hulk Fought the Mech-Avengers? So right off the bat that's the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard so we are on the right track. We also get a different animation style right away with the 70s/80s era animation for the TV show. The idea of the Watcher introducing the episodes is fine, at least it's consistent. I just really hate the actual narration. It's too on the nose and I hate being told things as I’m seeing them, it's not a good storytelling device, it feels lazy and you are calling your audience stupid. These Mech suits just look like Gundam rip offs. This whole episode is basically What If The Hulk Was Actually Godzilla? All that said, Monica is in this episode and I love Monica and she’s being so underutilized in the MCU so I appreciate her inclusion in this.The problem with most of these stories is because they are only a half hour long they are super rushed. I don’t need a billion details but I do need it to feel like a complete story and most of these episodes are not that. So this What If? Literally just took Gundum and Power Rangers and sprinkled in some Avengers, LAME. Eh 4/10.

What If Agatha Went to Hollywood? See this isn’t a great What If? Because it's literally just something that she would actually do. This is not a stretch of the imagination at all, there is nothing in this that is abstract. They even threw in that one of the Eternals was an actor when he went his own way. This just feels so so very lazy. This isn’t creative. The dance scene however was extremely well done and perhaps the best thing to come out of this show. Again the very concept was lazy and not actually that creative but it was perhaps the best written episode this show has done so far, Celestial Agatha looked super badass. 8/10.

What If The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier? Weird premise which is exactly what we are looking for here. Alexi is such a perfect subject for this. Also watching Alexi and Bucky play off each other is really great because Alexi is so damn intense but he’s also hilarious. The dialogue in this episode is the best part. 8/10.

Overall I think that this season is definitely off to a much better start. The last two seasons of What If…? Have genuinely been really bad. In these first three episodes we are at least centered on 3 separate groups of people which is really what the main problem with the first two seasons was. But I swear to god if Captain Carter makes any appearances this season I am going to lose it. So far What If…? Season 3 is 10X better than anything we got in the first two seasons.
