Twisters Review
Ignite your storm-chasing cowboy fantasies

Twisters Review
The Good:
This was a great action movie, and it felt perfect as a summer blockbuster. I completely understand the internet’s new obsession with cowboy Glen Powell and I am onboard.
This movie felt to me like what movies should get to be once in a while. It didn’t try to do anything crazy, and the movie as a whole felt as though it was aware of what its job was, and it did that job well. It was a movie that you had a fantastic time in the movie theater with. It got the blood pumping, had a fantastic soundtrack, and also tugged on some of the emotional heartstrings.
I especially enjoyed the cinematography of the movie and the special effects for the tornados. I have never seen a tornado in real life, but in pictures, they often look different than our perfect picture of a tornado.
I loved how developed the characters felt even after just meeting them. No one was strictly an archetype or trope, and it was also a movie about healing from trauma and forgiving oneself just as much as it was about crazy tornados.
The acting was great, especially from the top three actors. They all had great chemistry with each other and played their characters with depth and understanding.
Things I might change:
This is a little nitpicky because I really did enjoy this movie, but I was not a fan of Daisy Edgar-Jones’ character Kate’s sixth sense about tornados. For a movie that talked a lot about the science of tornados (which I didn’t understand but some people online said was pretty good), it felt a little strange that Kate would have this spidey sense about tornados and that no one in the country could do what she did even with all their equipment and experience. It would have felt more grounded for me if she was dismissed for her scientific ideas about stopping tornados being too costly and that’s why she brought a different perspective to the table.
There were also two plot lines that I thought had a lot of potential but were wrapped up very quickly. Glen Powell’s Tyler was an arrogant “tornados wrangler” with a YouTube channel, but secretly he had a heart of gold and a soft spot for the victims of these storms. I love that plot, but we learned far too quickly that he was actually the good guy. Tyler and Kate’s banter and budding relationship had some of the best moments in the movie, but it would’ve added more oomph to a fun storyline if they had properly held off on revealing he wasn’t really a jerk.
Similarly, Javi’s storyline involving his boss who was buying up all the destroyed land and profiting off tragedies didn’t get a proper pay off. Also, all these people who have lived in Tornado Alley their whole lives have no idea how to evacuate their town and the meteorologists couldn’t predict the tornado until it was gigantic and on top of them.
One thing they could have further capitalized on was the fear surrounding tornados. I think it would have been cool if the first couple instances that we saw a tornado felt like a horror movie then later it could become more thriller/action movie like. The scene in the past with the tornado that hurt her friends almost did this, and I was shocked at how quickly they were willing to kill off characters. But everything happened very quickly, so I felt shock more than fear or dread.
Again this is all very nitpicky and just things that I might have done because this was a very fun movie. Overall, this movie made me want to go storm chasing and find myself a cowboy romance. Enough said.
