They Boys

Character Development

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The Boys just wrapped up its 4th season, we know that there will only be one season left. But as of now there has been a lot of character development from just about everyone. That said some of the arcs are more carefully crafted than others. Some heroes we only saw on screen for a single season, and some weren’t in this last season. Well we are going to talk about the best character arcs of The Boys and where they might go in season 5.

Let’s start with one we may or may not see in season 5; A-Train. Now I think that he has more than earned his spot on any best character growth list. The first season he was arrogant, so secure in Vought and the seven that he felt untouchable. He really didn’t have feelings or a sense of any moral compass. In season 2 he started to suffer some consequences but he also started to be more than just an arrogant hero. He starts actually wanting to be portrayed by Vought in a better light. He fought for more of a character. Then we have this latest season. He’s pretty driven by fear but no longer controlled by it. He actually fights against Homelander by giving information over to The Boys and then he flees. As he should. Now I am really hoping we get to see him back for the final season, but really I am happy that he got this kind of redemption arc and he got to go live in safety.

We are obviously seeing this one next season, Kimiko. I love her so much and honestly she has been carrying this show for 4 seasons now. Kimiko in season 1 was just a mute supe who didn’t really know how to communicate with the people around her. That is, until she bonded with Frenchie. I think a lot of their character development is intertwined as they spend so much of their stories attached to each other. It is pretty difficult to separate them. As the show progresses Kimiko shows a very strong bond to her friends, she is fiercely protective of them. She starts to have these dream sequences where we finally get insight into what goes on in her head. She is a very positive and hopeful person with a big heart. And at the end of this latest season she talks. Frenchie gets ripped away from her and she yells for him. It was beautiful and heartbreaking. I really hope I get to see those two reunite next season because I absolutely hate the way that their relationship was handled this season.

And last but not least we have Maeve. She was not in this season at all because she got to fake her death and be all happy and though a part of me hopes that she gets to keep that, I think we might need her for this final fight in the last season. Queen Maeve was always phenomenal, from the second she came on screen. But we got to see her deal with her bisexuality, including being outed on live television. She went from telling Annie to suck it up and learn how the game is played to blackmailing Homelander and owning her relationship. Her story is my favorite, she is strong and beautiful and I hope the show ends with her happy ending.

We have one final season left of The Boys and these characters are the ones I believe have the most character development thus far. Season 4 was a little shaky as far as the consistency of the writing goes but I am hopeful that season 5 will bring it home. This doesn’t mean that none of the other characters had character development but I think that these characters are the ones who have made the biggest leaps.

I loved A-Train’s redemption as well! And Kimiko’s screaming for Frenchie at the end of the season was so, so sad.
