There are some important details about The Tomorrow War 2, which is finally coming to Amazon Prime Video after years of anticipation. Chris Pratt plays biology teacher and Iraq War veteran Dan Forester in the original 2021 film, The Tomorrow War. Dan goes back in time to lead a recon mission after American citizens are warned about an alien invasion in 2048 by U.S. soldiers from the future. In 2022, Dan defeats the Queen Whitespike with the help of his father James (J. K. Simmons) and fellow draftee Charlie (Sam Richardson), marking the end of the Tomorrow War.
Although critics gave The Tomorrow War varying reviews, the ambitious plot line made it obvious that there was a much larger sci-fi universe that could be explored. There was always the possibility of a space-themed sequel that would explain the origin of the Whitespikes, given the conclusion of The Tomorrow War and its expansive plot. However, it would take years for new updates to appear, and the sequel appeared to stall almost immediately after it was announced. The next big step has now been taken, and The Tomorrow War 2 is getting closer to becoming a reality.
The Most Recent News on The Tomorrow War 2
The most recent announcement was a script update for The Tomorrow War 2, which was released several years after the first film's premiere. The original movie's screenplay was written by Zach Dean, who was also hired to write the sequel. The script for the sequel is now complete, and Dean has declared that "it’s happening, and it’s happening relatively soon." Since Dean had previously stated that writing was still in progress back in October 2024, this news is somewhat unexpected.
Although not much is known about the sequel yet, Dean's assurance implies that he is more knowledgeable about it than most people. Although Amazon Prime Video has not disclosed much about the sequel's progress, Dean seems to believe that filming will start "soon." It's crucial to remember that Dean didn't provide many details, and it's still not entirely clear where the movie is at this point.
Read Dean's full statement here:
It’s progressing. I wrote the second film. I know they’ve been continuing to develop that story. I think it’s happening, and it’s happening relatively soon. One of the great things about Chris is it’s so easy to empathize and get into his character’s [head]. He’s so disarming in terms of his humor, and he’s also really emotional as an actor. [I]t takes a very different version but of similar ideas. Things that could have gone a darker way.
The Tomorrow War 2 Is In Development
With its extensive film slate, Netflix is no stranger to producing multi-million dollar productions just for their platform. Given this, it was hardly shocking that The Tomorrow War 2 was approved back in 2021, just a few years after the first film's release. Chris Pratt, the original director, and a number of other actors were also in negotiations to reprise their roles. The costly franchise was being developed for years at a time, but it seemed to stall there.
When screenwriter Zach Dean declared in February 2025 that the script was complete and that production would soon start, everything changed. Dean's announcement is the first tangible news since 2021, despite the fact that he gave no details. Unfortunately, Prime Video hasn't confirmed much, and as the months and years go by quickly, it's still unclear exactly how The Tomorrow War is doing.
Details of the Tomorrow War 2 Cast
Many of the original stars were reportedly in negotiations to return to their roles in the sequel to The Tomorrow War, according to early cast updates, but it's unclear what has changed since 2021. The first name that came up was Chris Pratt, who is most likely going to play Dan again. In the meantime, the early news for the sequel specifically mentioned J.K. Simmons, who is expected to reprise his role as Dan's father, James Daniel Forester, Sr. Sam Richardson was in negotiations to return as Charlie, the draftee.
Additionally, it was anticipated that Dan's wife, Emmy Forester, and GLOW alum Betty Gilpin would return to their roles as therapists. Yvonne Strahovski played the part of Colonel Muri Forester (as an adult) in the first film, and she will most likely return as well. Lastly, one of the few names listed in the returning cast was Edwin Hodge, who might reprise his role as Dorian, a veteran draftee.
Details of the Tomorrow War 2 Story
The director of The Tomorrow War has hinted that the aliens and their homeworld will be the main focus of The Tomorrow War 2. McKay suggests that a prequel or sequel is likely in a report from July 2021. Additionally, his remarks suggest that Pratt's Dan Forester and his fellow survivors will make a comeback:
"We had such a fun design process... We talked about the world of these creatures, where they came from, how they were created or raised, and how they were maybe being used. I like world-building experiments, especially when you have the potential of some kind of time travel. I think that a sequel could go in a lot of fun areas and the ethnographic study of the Whitespikes in their world and where they came from, and what their purpose was, and all of that kind of thing. So yeah, I think that could be a lot of fun. And with this cast, too, we’re just getting started."
Even though the majority of the cast is in negotiations to return, the film must still keep the human element front and center. Although the sequel covers a lot of the same ground as the first film, screenwriter Zach Dean noted that it is also a little darker than the first. Despite the incredibly limited amount of information, it is evident that The Tomorrow War 2 is still being refined from a narrative standpoint. Choosing the right plot is the most difficult part of the sequel because there are so many options to choose from.
