The Suicide Squad is complete insanity (in all the best ways)
Written and directed by James Gunn

It's been the year of big bold comic adventures. The latest is The Suicide Squad written and directed by James Gunn. It's been a hotly discussed topic all across social media as that was to be expected.
Let me just start off by saying James Gunn didn't miss. To use another clichéd phrase used way too often these days: James Gunn understood the assignment. If nothing else due to personal preferences It's hard to deny that this film is wall to wall insanity and unpredictability turned all the way up. Maybe in the minds of some the humor was crude. That was offset by some very high stakes moments that had emotional weight.
If you want to nitpick I'm sure you can turn to that one scene that you didn't like and write a narrative about it and what it means but I thought Gunn was very on point with what he was aiming for. Despite the antics and the crazy sequences it had a lot of heavy character development for the core group. Some were disposed of quickly and others much later than I anticipated but it led to each moment having a weight and a purpose. It had a much better flow than a lot of films of this nature do. That's not a knock directly on past DC projects but to go all insane on a fight with a giant star fish while also growing a character like Harley Quinn you have to have a wild mind.
From this moment on there will be direct spoilers for the film. Do not continue unless you want to read and have big moments spoiled for yourself. Fair warning.
Margot Robbie was brilliant once again. She continues to allow growth for Harley, still capturing that insanity. She is brilliant. This film had some very sleek action sequences that showed a new side of her mind.

Daniela Malchior as Ratcatcher 2 stole the show and the budding brother/sister type relationship with Bloodsport was good. I was glad she was one of the few who survived because I really grew to feel compassion for her origin story.
I liked Kinnaman in the first film and was glad to see Gunn show him smiling more and embracing his role with the Squad. His emotional arc was concluded by death at the hands of Peacemaker and that was one of the few moments where my jaw dropped. It was very tragic and unexpected. I thought he was one of the untouchables to be fair but when Gunn said no one was safe he obviously meant it.
John Cena's Peacemaker was such a macho douche bro but it worked later on in the film when you could see how far he was willing to take the mission. Cena has never been better and it could be very interesting to see what James Gunn has in store for the series. Cena proved he can hang with more seasoned veterans and deserves another shot at this character.
James Gunn kept it focused while having the gravitas to make it colorful and vibrant amidst all the bloodshed and chaotic action. It's chaos in the most Suicide Squad like way and that's why it succeeds. The social commentary is far from deep but definitely a smart play given today's current climate of political uncertainty. Tasking a group of supervillains to protect America's secret is very on point with politics of the modern age and it serves as a catalyst for Gunn to go off in other ways.

It's all but clear James Gunn will return to the DCEU and I honestly hope he writes for Harley again. She was the best she has ever been and Robbie deserves a writer willing to be bold and innovative, something Gunn has never been shy of doing.
The ability Gunn has to make you care for a character that in the next frame is taken away is a special talent and one as an Aspiring writer I admire a lot. For instance the one scene that comes to mind is Captain Boomerang and Harley having a nice little reunion scene and you expect them to have another journey together and bam he is taken away 5 minutes later. It's that no fucks given mentality that got James Gunn this movie and immediately sky rockets him to the top of the DC food chain when it comes to his choice of characters and story. It's just that simple in this case. High Risk that reaps high rewards from audience feedback and critical analysis will win every time. You can't say one has a bigger influence over the other. You can try and over analyze the numbers, the marketing strategy but the positive feedback speaks for itself in a major way. That's what makes me happy. This has been the least divisive among the logical thinking fanbase in a long time and that's a good sign for both James Gunn and DC Films.
