When thinking about my guilty pleasure tv that I binge watch I would have to say that The Parkers would be my favorite. It is about a witty young adult by the name of Kimberly “Kim” Parker and her mother Nicole “Nikki” Parker who takes on school life at Santa Monica College. Along their journey, they are accompanied by friends Andale Wilkerson, Stevie Van Lo, Thaddeus “T” Ratcliff, and Professor Stanley Olgavee.
Nikki has the hugest crush on Professor Olgavee and reminded him and everyone else every time he came around. She is my favorite character on the show because she is ambitious, honest, hilarious, and outgoing. Although, she is a 35-year-old junior college freshman, she did not allow that to degrade or belittle her. She is a plus sized woman with style and a personality out of this world. Her confidence and courageous attitude are what keeps me interested. You never know what is going to happen next with her.
Now, Kim Parker, is completely different. While Nikki is focused on her education, Kim has her attention on other things. She loves to party, dance, sew clothes, and sing. She along with best friends Stevie and T have a band called, Freestyle Unity.
The show is about 22 years old, yet I still watch it as if it is a brand-new series. My favorite episode is when Professor Olgavee was excited to get his Los Angles Lakers jersey signed by Shaquille O’Neal and Nikki wanted to get it framed for him as a gift but instead it ended up getting chewed up by a stray dog that followed Kim home. Nikki and best friend Andale ended up sneaking inside of the Lakers locker room disguised as personal trainers just so that they can get Shaq’s signature on the jersey before the Professor finds out. It was hilarious watching them go through all the obstacles just to get everything done. Although, the personal trainer disguised was not successful, Shaq thought that it was clever for them to have gone through all the trouble just to get his signature. He ended up bringing another signed jersey to Nikki’s home as a gift.
The relationship between Nikki and Professor Olgavee is uncommon. She fought for his love and attention for 5 years before he realized that she was the woman who loved him no matter what. Professor Olgavee looked at Nikki as possessive and exasperating. He gave her nothing but tough love until another man got her attention. This show makes me feel like I am apart of the crew on every episode. It teaches you how to be a friend, lover, and you learn a life lesson from every episode.
The main reason why I am so glued to this sitcom is because it expressed love and loyalty. Not to mention it is hilarious. I guarantee that if you were to watch you would most definitely agree. On the last episode, Nikki and Professor Olgavee finally sees eye to eye. I would have loved for the show to go on for another season just so it could get its perfect ending. Kim and Nikki’s mother-daughter relationship are no different from real life relationship between a mother and her teenage/young adult daughter.
Between the ages of 18-23 women feel as if they are “too grown” to take advice from mom, but what we soon find out is, mom was right. Kim experienced that a lot throughout the years of the show. Nikki tried to help her figure life out, but she decided to go her own route each time. Although, she went with her own decisions, Nikki was still there at the end of it all to help her get back on her feet.
