The Flash: High Speed Satisfaction

A review and analysis of “The Flash”

By Joe PattersonPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The Flash from DC Comics has hit theaters and boy does it deliver. It definitely packs some very high speed fun that comic fans will enjoy and it has some great nostalgia moments that will make old school DC Comics fans rejoice.

When DC Comics announced that The Flash was underway comic nerds from every background were overjoyed. Barry “The Flash” Allen has been one of DC Comic’s biggest superstars since he was first conceived and fans were waiting for a day when he would get to headline his own project after fans were first given a glimpse of him in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). Ezra Miller who has made such a positive impression on the entertainment industry with films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and Fantastic Beast series has once again made another impressionable mark playing Barry “The Flash” Allen since he first made his debut in the DC Extended Universe in 2016.

The film’s plot follows Barry Allen also known as The Flash still operating as a superhero under the guidance of Batman and the Justice League in the six years since they first made their formation. Barry’s father is currently still in prison for wrongful imprisonment in the death of Barry’s mother. Barry discovers in his speed that he can travel back in time and alter events of the past and seeks to undo the death of his mother as well as exonerate his father. Barry’s attempt to change the history of the past proves to be successful, but comes with a chaotic ripple of consequences.

The Flash does a great job at mixing together comedy, action, adventure and even serious dramatic notes as well. Ezra Miller definitely carries the film with his upbeat energy and sense of humor. In doing so he assures that there is never a dull moment and keeps the viewer locked in with every word he utters and every action he takes.

This film is pretty much the DC universe’s version of Spider-Man: No Way Home from Marvel Comics. The main character attempts to alter history to undo a burden, or a heartache and as a result creates multiversal mayhem. The film is also like No Way Home in the sense that it crosses over characters from other DC Comic films outside of the DCEU as well. Of course the biggest example of this we have is Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman from the Tim Burton Batman films of the 80’s and the 90’s.

Michael Keaton’s return as Batman is perhaps the most satisfying trait of this film. As one could expect he definitely brings those cheery hoorah moments of nostalgia that really makes fans jump out of their seats. He does a lot of this with his action and heartfelt expressions of his character. Keaton really did a great job at showing that though he has not played this character in over 30 years he has not missed a beat and still has all the chops necessary to step back in the BBC shoes of the caped crusader known as Bruce Wayne.

Michael Keaton’s return as Batman is not the only gratifying cameo the film brings to audiences. Without giving away too much, fans will we be delighted to see a lot of familiar faces from not only the DCEU, but other DC comic based films that have graced both the big screen and the small screen for nearly a century. There will definitely be a lot of jaw dropping moments that are going to leave fans talking and speculating about the bright future of the DCEU. Bottom line, The Flash definitely delivers and is one heck of a crowd pleaser, if you’re a comic book film fan you should definitely go give this film a watch. I personally give it an A-grade.
