The First Frost: Chinese Drama Review

This story was such a beautiful masterpiece, this story belongs to the same universe as another Chinese drama “ Hidden Love”. “Hidden Love” focused on Sang Zhi and Duan Jia Xu's love story while “The First Frost” focused on the relationship between Sang Yan and Wen Yi Fan. In my personal opinion “ The First Frost” is so much better than “ Hidden Love”. If you are looking for a sweet Chinese drama then “ Hidden Love” is the way to go, but if you are looking for a story with so much depth and layers then “ The First Frost” is the way to go. “ The First Frost” had a total of 32 episodes and starred Bai Jing Ting as Sang Yan and Zhang Ruo Nan as Wen Yi Fan.

This drama tells the story of Sang Yan and Wen Yi Fan. Sang Yan and Wen Yi Fan went to the same high school and they were also deskmates. They were also each other’s first love. Due to circumstances, Wen Yi Fan would leave Sang Yan and they would not meet each other for several years. Years later Wen Yi Fan became a reporter, while Sang Yan became a department manager and owns a bar called “Overtime”. One day, Wen Yi fan would go to the bar “Overtime” with her best friend Zhong Si Qioo. There she would bump into Sang Yan, after all these years. Initially, Wen Yi Fan pretends not to know him and he does the same. Due to circumstances, they would accidentally become housemates.

This drama would dive into the nostalgic youthful idea of first love. This may seem like a typical melodrama, but it is so much more than just romance. This story captured poetically the essence of first love and how it can be everlasting. This drama showed an unconditional love that embodied an unwavering commitment that led to a heartfelt journey that resulted in self-discovery and personal growth. This series showed that love does not just heal scars but love can also act as a guiding light through the darkness that brings you peace and you will feel safe. Love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a deliberate choice you make to love someone every single day. No matter how uncertain your life gets, you still choose to love the other person. I think this was such a beautiful message. This drama also shows that self-love is as important as love.

This first half of the series was very light, with sweet moments between Sang Yan and Wen Yi Fan. The second half of this series is deep, it would delve into the painful past of the protagonist. This series conveyed a powerful message. Some traumas cannot be healed easily, you will carry them with you for a long time. My heart broke for Wen Yi Fan and the things she goes through, her own family destroyed her. Your family is supposed to protect you and be there for you, and sometimes they would cause you more harm and trauma. That’s what happened to Wen Yi Fan, she always felt no one was there by her side, so she could not easily open herself to Sang Yan. Her mom never protected her and ignored her, practically her whole life. This was just sad to watch. So, she always felt that she did not deserve anything good and could not easily accept the male lead’s love.

The second half of this series was very deep and you could see that the female lead struggled with PTSD and because of this, she will always choose to run away and leave the male lead behind. She had to get strong to be ready for Sang Yan’s love. She does get strong and she will be ready to fight the people that caused her so much pain. It was just beautiful to see her get strong over time. She learned to stand up and fight. Another message this drama taught was that you should be strong enough to cut toxic people from your life, even if it’s your own family. If your family is the root cause of all your pain and suffering, then you must be brave to cut them from your life. Still keeping them in your life would cause more harm than good. Be brave and walk away from all the toxicity and the negative energy. This is what Wen Yi Fan did. She was able to let go of her painful past and walk side by side with Sang Yang.

I even felt bad for Sang Yan. He loved Wen Yi Fan unconditionally. But she left him twice without any explanation. He was heartbroken. When you get abandoned by someone you love, you will feel like you did something to make the other person leave you. I also admired his character. His love for Wen Yi Fan is unconditional. He would go to the ends of the world for her.

This whole drama is perfect from start to finish. Every single moment was so precious. It was such a good watch. If you have not watched it, you should check it.
