The 'Doctor Strange' Controversy: Is Marvel Whitewashing?
With Marvel’s Doctor Strange on the verge of hitting theaters everywhere, the conversation regarding it is only getting louder ---- and, with that, the controversy. Said controversy kicked off the moment the film’s casting was announced, which is when it was revealed that the role of the Ancient One (an elderly Tibetan man in the comics) would be filled by . . . the white British actress Tilda Swinton. Cries of whitewashing were immediately out in full force, especially given the recent protests over Scarlett Johansson’s casting in the upcoming Ghost in the Shell remake. Here in Doctor Strange we have yet another Asian character being played by a white person. Pretty blatant, right?

Jim Henson's lovable gang of Muppets (a combination of the words “marionette” and “puppet”) has made him the most celebrated and successful merchant of fantasy since Disney. In it's prime on television, The Muppet Show was the highest rated syndicated show in the US, and attracted 235 million viewers in 102 countries. The series ran from 1976 to 1981, totaling at 120 episodes. Success didn't stop with TV, either. There wasn't a piece of merchandise on the market that didn't have its Muppet equivalent: dolls, books, clothes, household appliances, calendars, records, linen, art objects, even jewelry. As if all this weren't enough, Henson and his team launched into feature filmmaking with The Muppet Movie in 1979 and nine spinoffs.

Alan Rickman's Legacy
Alan Rickman was one of those actors that just did everything. Movies, television, Broadway, his talents knew no bounds. Although he passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age 69, his memory lives on through his expansive resume. From Die Hard to performing works of Chekhov, he was truly gifted and was able to adapt to any scene. When news of his passing started to trend, the comments on Facebook were true testaments to his character and ability. Fans posted pictures with him from the stage doors of various Broadway performances including Noel Coward's romantic comedy Private Lives; others commented on his extraordinary performance as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility and how that performance made them fans of Jane Austen; then there were the Die Hard comments. His role of Hans Gruber was unforgettable. In addition to his other accolades, he was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Although he is gone, he had one of those faces and accents that made him unique and he will forever be loved by fans worldwide.
