Captain America Will Lead the Secret Empire in Marvel's 2017 Comic Book Event
Back in May 2016, Marvel writer Nick Spencer shook the world with a horrific revelation. In Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, he revealed that Captain America was an agent of Hydra, and even hinted that he'd been part of Hydra all along. Needless to say, a firestorm of controversy ensued. It didn't take long for the truth to be revealed — Captain America had been warped by the power of a Cosmic Cube, and nothing could be the same again!

A Message To Frank Cho And Milo Manara: No, Your Sexualized Superheroines Aren't Being Censored
Comic Cons are a unique chance to sit in on some pretty important conversations. If you went to Lucca Comics and Games 2016 — an Italian Comic Con running this week — then you had the opportunity to sit in on a discussion about the future of comic book art. Controversial artists Milo Manara and Frank Cho held the modestly-titled panel "Frank Cho, Milo Manara And Women – A Dialogue Between Two Masters". There, they railed against censorship of their artistic styles, making a stand against the industry that — they claim — threatens to censor their art. Free speech for the win!

How The 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailer Suggests We'll Never See Miles Morales In The MCU
Back in 2011, the comic book world was shaken by the death of Spider-Man. Over in their so-called 'Ultimate Universe', Marvel took the gutsy move of killing off Peter Parker, and replacing him with a new Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a character who added a welcome tone of diversity to the comics, and soon proved to be a hit! With Peter Parker making his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, and soon to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, many fans have been wondering if Miles Morales will follow. Now that we've seen the first trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming, it doesn't look like Miles will be appearing any time soon.

Everything You Need To Know From The Tie-In Comics Before Seeing 'Doctor Strange'
Doctor Strange is the 14th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in many ways it's a fresh start. Unlike Captain America: Civil War, you don't need to be 100% up-to-speed with the wider MCU in order to recognize the characters and appreciate the plot. Doctor Strange introduces viewers to a whole new aspect of the MCU, and in so doing it takes a small step away from the wider shared universe. Don't get me wrong; the eagle-eyed viewer will spot a few gentle continuity nods, but the truth is that Doctor Strange stands on its own two feet.

Will Hush and Death in the Family Be DC's next Animated Movies?
2016 has been a mixed year for Batman fans. On the one hand, we got Ben Affleck's Batman in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad; in spite of initial fears (remember the Batfleck memes?), he's now already viewed by many as the best live-action Batman to date. We also got a classic DC comic, The Killing Joke, adapted into an animated story that featured Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their famous roles of Batman and the Joker! On the other hand, the DC Extended Universe has come in for a lot of flak (not always fairly), and The Killing Joke proved divisive. That said, we can draw a line under 2016 as the year we got a new Batman and a classic tale adapted into the DC Animated Universe - and that's good enough for me!

Less than a week ago, Marvel fans were excited to hear whispers of a new Marvel TV series - New Warriors, a very different Marvel series to the ones we're used to on Netflix! Starring Squirrel Girl, a much-loved character whose comic book popularity is booming right now, New Warriors was viewed as a lighthearted series with the potential for a lot of teenage angst.

Harley Quinn: Good or Evil? More Like "It's Complicated"
The run-up to #SuicideSquad made it clear that DC Film felt Harley Quinn had a lot of promise. Before the film was even released, DC had commissioned a sequel and a spin-off to be directed by Margot Robbie. Fans approached the film with an eager sense of expectation, anticipating that Harley would be the breakout character. Fortunately, for all the controversy surrounding Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie's performance was top-rate; the character won even the critics' hearts.

Marvel's Captain America HYDRA Revelation May Not Have Been A Mistake!
Last week, the first issue of Captain America: Steve Rogers was released - and the Internet's still seething over it! The comic culminated with the revelation that Steve Rogers is actually an agent of HYDRA, and even implied that he'd been a HYDRA agent all along. What's more, the plot - and vast chunks of the dialogue - is clearly intended to be a political analogy, making it all the more controversial.
