Six Flying Dragons

My Love for All things Korean

By Bus ObayomiPublished 6 years ago 2 min read

In 2010, I received a packet to teach in Korea. I was looking for a job and desperate to apply to any opportunity. I thought about the plane tickets and the challenge of moving to a new country, so I decided to no longer teach in Korea. Then, there was the gnam gnam style song that took the world by storm. I thought it was funny and nice. Then a friend of mine told me he would be working and living in a Korea for few years. He did not ony live in Korea but married a korean lady. Then, here comes my then finance and now-wife. She introduced me to Korean dramas. I found myself watching both the historical dramas and modern drams. Somehow, I was more captivated by the historical dramas than the modern/ romance dramas.

The first drama that captivated my interest was Queen Seon-Deok. This drama would probably be one of the best dramas that I have ever watched. It was so good that I had to watch a 60 drama episodes in a week. I also rewatched it the second time. I was more captivated with the history of Korea starting from when it was still Silla. And then here comes my favorite drama, the six-flying dragons. I have probably rewatched this drama 4 times. All the main characters were intriguing. I never thought I could learn so much about korean history. It was nice to understand the strive for power and the building of a nation. In the drama, the nation went from Goryeo to Jeseon and to now Korea. I never thought I would be doing additional research as I watched the movie.

The relationship between Yi Son-gye and Yi Ban-won would probably be one of the most intriguing relationship between a father and a son as they fight for a new country and for power. Yi Son-gye became the king of the new country of Joseon and Yi Ban-worn became the later king. There was alot of blood shed in this history. Most times, history always favor the victors so we would never know if who truly Yi Son-gye was. I was also captivated with the martial art experts Li ban-ji and Mooyool. This is such a tragic story between friends.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone that has not watched it. I will also suggest a remake of the making of Joseon nation.
