Rewatching The 100
How Murphy Became My Favourite Character
"May we meet again."
Just me, writing an opinion piece on one of my favourite television series of all time. I have referenced The 100 in a few older pieces of writing of mine. This series truly is special to me. The music, the characters, the plot; I love all of it. You can view one of my previous posts down below.
This is truly one of my favourite television series. I remember first watching the show when I was fifteen years old while "studying" for my finals. I was hooked after one episode. As I grew older, so did the characters. I liked that about the show, the characters matured from the delinquents they once were, and the show stops being so high-schooly as you get further into the series.
The 100 is based on the book series by Kass Morgan by the same name. Trust me when I say the series is absolutely nothing like the book. I only read the first one but apparently it does get better. I might have to give it a second chance.
The 100 is an American post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi Dystopian drama television series developed by Jason Rothenberg and is loosely based on the book series of the same name by Kass Morgan. The series follows a group of Delinquents, who have been sent down to Earth to see if it is survivable or not. For the first time in nearly a century, humans have returned to planet Earth, but they realize they're not alone.
The series premiered on The CW in the United States on March 19, 2014, attracting 2.73 million viewers on the original airing. In August 2019, it was announced that the series would come to an end with the seventh season. The last season premiered on May 20, 2020 and concluded on September 30, 2020.
The series is loosely based on The 100, the first novel in the hundred series by Kass Morgan. Some characters are original characters and do not appear in the books. A few also have their personalities switched or shared. The TV series is also considered to be ahead of the book series in events. Many of the events that happen in the TV show may not happen in the books.
Synopsis taken from here

I remember feeding my oldest son, being so excited every week for a new episode of season five. I watched a lot of tv back then as a new mother taking care of her newborn.
When Netflix removed the television series, I cried. I was so disappointed as I had nowhere else to watch the show. But thankfully, Amazon Prime has picked the series up again and I have been slowly rewatching the series during the summer months this past year. I am now on season six, episode four. I don't care for season seven as much, I do feel like they rushed the ending of what could have been an epic finale.
However, I do admire the character Murphy's growth throughout the show. Clarke truly became unlikeable towards the end and she used to be my favourite. Murphy's development as a character kept the show interesting for me.
He starts off as a side character, unlikeable, accused of murder in the first season. Then his character begins to develop more once he's locked inside the bunker by himself with nothing but crackers and alcohol to sustain him.
He becomes a major character in the process of defeating ALIE. His love story with Emori became one of my favourites, sure they fought, all couple's do. But the way he grew as a person after meeting Emori is quite remarkable to me.
Everybody hated Murphy except Emori- she saw his value and worth even if he didn't, even if the people around him didn't. She truly seen something worth loving in him and that's what makes him a great character.
"Love at first knife to throat." John Murphy
I had this scene in mind while writing this post. He truly never loved anybody; including himself. But, then he met Emori and his whole universe shifted. There may be some spoilers ahead in this clip, but if you're a fan of the show you already know what you're in for.
A+ character development in my mind. The John Murphy from season one of the show would have never sacrificed himself for anybody.
If you're curious as to what the song playing in the clip is called, I'll leave a link down at the end of this post. It's called We're Going Home by Vance Joy. I love the song, it truly suits the show and this scene.
All in all, if you like science fiction, (no I'm not talking about the global news right now) and don't mind young adult television series, I highly recommend this show! Like I said before, it's listed on Amazon Prime. It's got great characters, an amazing plot, and the worst ending imaginable. There you go guys, there is my recommendation.
I hope you enjoyed reading this post. Oh before I forget, click here for a link to the song in the previous YouTube link.

I felt the same with the last seasons! Might rewatch now that I'm older, might like it better now
