Reviewing Wednesday: A Series on Netflix
'Wednesday' is an inventive adaptation that stems from 'The Addams Family'.

Let’s welcome Wednesday Addams to the school.
In 2022, Wednesday was released to Netflix, showcasing a unique spin on the classic Addams Family story. Enrolled in a prep school by her parents, Wednesday is faced with the challenge of fitting in with the crowd. However, her problems are compounded when she discovers a psychic ability and a murder mystery on the campus. In order to protect her family name, Wednesday must solve the mystery before it destroys everything she holds dear.
The Addams Family has been a popular television show for decades, but Wednesday offers a creative spin-off. Despite initial skepticism, audiences have been drawn in by the show’s trademark dark humor. However, some viewers have expressed disappointment that the story took a turn towards fantasy towards the climax, which did not match the gothic tone of the rest of the show.
Jenna Ortega's impressive performance as Wednesday Addams is a highlight of the show. Ortega had the perfect dark comedy flair, and dedicated herself to the role by learning to play the cello, taking fencing lessons, and even learning to speak German. Ortega also choreographed her own dance, which has now gone viral on the internet.
Wednesday has never been one to openly share her feelings. She prefers to remain in her own world, and in some ways, her attitude acknowledges an important lesson - that we should be happy with who we are and not let anyone else put us down. However, choosing to look out for oneself instead of others can lead down a dark path. For the first time, Wednesday must confront her own actions and think about the consequences when she doesn’t have anyone to turn to.
The series boasts a great cast, with excellent acting from all involved. Emma Myers was particularly excellent as Enid, who is a stark contrast to Wednesday. Any interactions between them made for some of the show’s funniest moments, especially when Wednesday first notices the differences in their shared dorm room. However, despite their differences, the two manage to make their relationship work, teaching us all a valuable lesson.
Other notable cast members include Hunter Doohan, Percy Hayres White, Gwendoline Christie, and an appearance by Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 90s films. Victor Dorobantu was especially great as Thing, and many viewers have suggested that the lively hand could have its own series.
As for the rest of the Addams family, Catherina Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Isaac Ordonez, and Fred Armisen all delivered terrific performances, with Zeta-Jones standing out in particular as Morticia Addams.
Once again, Tim Burton has invited us into his fantastical world. It’s no surprise that Wednesday bears his signature style, with its creatively dark and eccentric settings. Burton's unique vision is evident in the show's camera work, designs, and color mixing. Wednesday’s black attire stands out in the midst of vivid and bright colors. Overall, Burton did an excellent job in bringing the story to life and working with the cast.
While the series is undeniably entertaining, there are a few issues with the storyline that some viewers have noted. For example, some felt that the story was not particularly original, as school plotlines have been explored in various forms of media in the past. Additionally, some viewers felt that the rest of the Addams family should have appeared in just one episode, with the murder frame against the family not necessarily relevant to a series about Wednesday.
Finally, the various fantasy elements, such as werewolves and vampires, felt like a separate story. While it is true that the Addams family are gothic people who believe in such things, these elements took the story in a direction that felt somewhat disconnected from the rest of the Despite its flaws, Wednesday has still managed to garner a strong fan following. The show's focus on dark humor, unique characters, and quirky storylines has made it a hit among audiences. One of the most impressive things about the show is the cast's performances. Each actor brought their character to life in a way that was both engaging and entertaining. Jenna Ortega's performance as Wednesday was especially impressive. She managed to capture the character's dark humor and emotional depth with ease, making her a standout in the series.
The show's writing is also a strong point. While some plot points may have been a bit predictable, the series manages to keep viewers engaged with its clever dialogue and interesting character relationships. The writers did a great job of exploring Wednesday's character and delving into her past, making her a more fully realized and relatable character. The show also tackles important themes like self-acceptance and the dangers of conformity, making it a great watch for audiences of all ages.
Overall, Wednesday is a fun and engaging series that is definitely worth checking out. While it may not be perfect, it manages to capture the spirit of The Addams Family while still standing on its own as a unique and entertaining series. With great performances, clever writing, and a unique style, it's easy to see why so many viewers have fallen in love with Wednesday. Whether you're a fan of the original Addams Family or just looking for a fun and quirky new show to watch, Wednesday is definitely worth your time.
