Reviewing Season Two of Umbrella Academy
The Good, the Bad, and the Hairy
Season Two being set in the past and the civil rights/JFK era of history is a huge thing right now. Allison being able to make her way into the middle of the civil rights fight is a beautiful way to explain and show the importance of women of color in that time period. I was bugged by Allison’s hair change (I guess it makes sense being that she is a modern lady thrown into the '60s and her style of hair was not normal back then). Giving her a husband during her time in the '60s was a good add, but it only drove a bit of a wedge between her and Luther in my opinion.
Luther found himself as a fighter/bodyguard and he was damn good at it! His attitude towards having to save the world again was a bit too shitty for my liking. You think anyone else wanted to? Shit happens, get over yourself, you’re a science experiment with an ape and you can help your other superhuman siblings save the world and get back home. For their sake, help them. I may have a bit of a grudge towards Luther because of how he acts towards Vanya.
Diego and Lila? I have a love/hate relationship with this pair. I don’t really see why they added a daughter for the Handler other than to further Diego’s storyline. Diego being “crazy” is an interesting plot point. Still, really don’t understand the Swedish assassins, but cool. Five still having to be a “leader” of the group while still looking like a teenager is hilarious. The outfit is an odd continuation choice. KLAUS continues to be a freaking hot mess but also good for him, he started a cult! I feel like they could’ve shown it a bit more but I liked the addition of him being guru/cult leader. He legit failed on being the voice for Ben. He could’ve been so much more helpful. I liked the possession parts because Ben deserved better.
Vanya being happy and having amnesia is all I could’ve hoped for her. She deserves to be happy with Sissy. So pure and cute. Don’t know where Harlan being affected by her power came from, I guess from her reviving him? I loved seeing Vanya rediscover herself as a part of the family and even though Luther reacted badly to her, I’m not mad about her at all. I hate that everyone blames Vanya for the moon incident and has issues letting her back in. It’s not her fault Reginald repressed her powers? If she could’ve stayed with Sissy and never went back, it may have been better for her honestly. Not that I’d want to lose her as a character, I just don’t like that much of a dislike from the others towards her.
WHEN I SAY BABEY, YOU SAY POGO. The best part of the whole season. Hands down. 15/10 cuteness overload. He’s so smart and sweet and deserves the world worth of bananas. No, I don’t think I’m overreacting, it’s 4 am at the time of writing this. I loved seeing the small meetings/bumping into each other between the siblings. Allison and Klaus were probably my favorite. Super sweet.
Basically, the Hargreeves children learn some unfortunate truths about their father's past and it's not the prettiest. The season concludes with trying to save JFK, a duo of Fives, and Sissy's son Harlan showing some power. The goal of going back to where they came from doesn't end up as planned, but when does it ever?
The group ends the finale in an alternate timeline, where Ben is alive, along with Reginald and possibly Mom? The siblings in the new "now" are where the next season will continue. But who are the Umbrella Academy replaced by in the new space? The group is called the Sparrow Academy, and Ben is their leader. We will learn more about the rest of them in the next season.
