A Track by Track Look at Lover by Taylor Swift
From a Former Music Student who Loves T-Swift
This review was originally written in 2018 when the album was released (my first-ever listen to the complete thing). I'm not changing much about it, and I won't apologize for my music-loving self coming out and giving her love for this album. I love Taylor Swift's music and it will be a constant on this blog. This is essentially a review and a message to Taylor regarding how much I enjoyed the album.
I Forgot That You Existed: How I feel about my ex-best friend from elementary/middle school. I gave up on her after I started homeschooling. Don't let your toxic friendships keep you down. We just forgot about each other and we both moved on.
Cruel Summer: It's a cute poppy song. Relationships, I guess? I guess the screaming really gets me in the feels because I get so angry about relationships sometimes. I'm emotional. I like this side of Taylor.
Lover: I CRIED when I first heard it (it was released as a single before the album). It's so sweet and I'm so grateful that I exist at the same time as this song. If my fiancé and I didn't already have a gorgeous song to use as our first dance, this would be a top contender.
The Man: I've been looking forward to this song because it's the same track number as Speak Now (my favorite song off of that album). I agree with the message because of how women are still treated, especially in media. I'm sick of it too, sis. I want to be just like you and not give a F**k about who likes my music. Hopefully, one day I can show you that. I feel like this is going to be a great power song for women who have to look at themselves in the mirror and tell themselves they deserve all the good things like a promotion or a good life (as an opposite to Archer with hating your face).
The Archer: I think we've all had that time in our lives where we've felt attacked emotionally. This song is a great representation of it. I've loved it since I heard it.
I Think He Knows: I love the bass!! SIS. YOU MADE THIS. We were all hoping for a revenge-type song but it's a SONG that I'd be embarrassed to listen to around people. This is such a saucy song. I LOVE IT.
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince: Okay so "You Belong with Me" maybe….but grown up? I like the dice theme again (from "Cruel Summer"). Maybe a continuation of something on rep? Cause I hear a lot of rep themes but also younger lovey themes (Fearless era?)
Paper Rings: THE BASS IS LIT. I could see myself dancing down the aisle to this!! It's so cute!! We're such a couple that gives no craps about the wedding and simple things are what we're all about. THE KEY CHANGE?? HOLD ME. TAYLOR STOP. I CAN'T THIS IS SO CUTE.
Cornelia Street: The piano is cool. Okay, it's a bit of a breakup song? More of a hopeful thing where you never want to go back to your worst fight. I feel that. Okay, I feel the end part. Hold on to the people who make a difference in your life. Find your lover and be happy. Thank you, Taylor.
Death By A Thousand Cuts: Percussion!! I love the choral aspect. WHAT ARE THOSE FLUTTER PIANO NOTES. TOO MUCH BEAUTIFUL. The guitar now?? TAYLOR this is an instrumental goddess of a song. I don't know what I like more! You really went all out for a breakup song. VIOLIN. I can't. All of it at once is too much. You're trying to kill music students with this song. (One of my top 5).
London Boy: A really cute song about international lovers. She's so cute! All the references are killer, even for someone who's only ever gone about Harry Potter deep into British things. Wow.
Soon You'll Get Better (feat. The Chicks): The song I believe to be about Andrea. I hope it all goes better. But people with issues can so hold onto this song for hope. Because I know I will with just depression and such. We love you, Taylor. (Second song to make me cry).
False God: I'M SO EXCITED TO HEAR THIS. Saxophone, really Taylor? Or trumpet? I can't tell and I'm annoyed with myself because of it. I really dig the vibe of it. Love song but slightly jazzy. Good one.
You Need To Calm Down: Still a bop, always a bop. Pride is pride. Don't put people down for stupid stuff. I'm always too loud when I sing this. Fight me for it. The bass is still my favorite instrument aspect of it.
Afterglow: Apologetically sweet. Support your lover in their dark times unless there's a serious reason for you not to. I understand crap like this. This is a song I would play to simmer a fight down.
ME! (feat. Brendon Urie): Still my favorite of the singles. Who am I kidding I can't choose. I love Panic! so Brendon being on it made me really happy. I relate because I always feel like I'm a lot to handle. Also, I hope she brings back the "hey kids, city name is fun" for tour. That would be awesome. Cause we all want it. You know we do Tay. (I kid, like I'm gonna be able to afford tour, HA). Kind of sad that they took it out for the album version though.
It's Nice To Have A Friend: Very Melanie Martinez style in my opinion. Also is it a banjo or am I stupid? TRUMPET!! WE LOVE A GOOD TRUMPET. Ooooo I really like it.
Daylight: We have a return to the luck element from earlier. I like it. I really like the idea of only wanting to only be around that one person. I cherish that feeling. I really enjoy the background/muffled vocals. Ending piano. So pretty. We knew that step into the daylight and let it go was going to be a lyric. OKAY so I hear you with the Kesha-like audio clip at the end of the end song (re: Ke$ha's "Spaceship").
