Representation in Mordern Media is insulting.
Problems of forced representation in Modern Media

Yes, I said it. Representation in Modern Media is indeed "insulting." And for those who wanna know here is the reason why : When I was kid I remember watching a lot of cartoons from various channel. Such as Ben 10 from Cartoon Network, The avatar from Nickelodeon, etc, My all time favorite show was "Avatar : the Last Airbender ".
And yes this show was full of oriental representation. The thing is the creator of the show didn't put that as an main priority. Instead they focused on telling a good story, a story that anyone can relate and feel interested about it. Not making representation character's that merely share one or two thing with audience.
Now days creator often forget what should be focused and what shouldn't. This days the best representation of Asian character you can get is Rose Tico. I never realized the whole character of TV show Avatar was Asia oriented, because that's how good character all of them was. All of the character in show had their own problem, their own arc to continue.
It is beneficial to have diverse set of character in the story, because it gives the reader diverse set of views and problem. It could be really refreshing and entertaining when it's used well. But the problem is they either too lazy or too scared to do it right.
Since Rose Tico in Star wars : Last Jedi is also female let's compare her to other female character in movies. Let's start with most famous ones first, Ripply in Alien franchise. Ellen Ripley, commonly known as Ripley is a main protagonist in Classic Alien franchise. As you guessed from the name Ripley is she. In the beginning of the franchise Ripply starts as a person who is scared, scared of Xenomorph ( Main antagonist in Alien franchise). In the end of the franchise she become stronger and fearless warrior, but not like the case of Rose it wasn't entitled or forced it to her. She earned it, she earned that by surviving numerous occasions with Xenomorph, she earned by fighting against her worst fear.
Now let's see Roes's story : In beginning of the story Roes lost her sister, in the middle of the story she captured during the mission, in the end of the story she stops one of the main protagonist to sacrifice because she thinks rebel should be based on love and hope not hate. The problem her very own sister "SACRIFICE" for the rebel, to give them a time to run away from their enemy. As we can see her motive, her story aren't even interesting. It feels more contrived than natural.
That's why the modern days representation in media is insulting and nothing more than cash grabbing with hideous intention. Thinking of "Oh I must include minorities in my story so they can feel represented." is just disgusting. It's not about having character that shares ethnicity or race with minorities, it's about creating a good character.
How does that have any difference than saying " I need to help you because you're weaker." That's is nothing more than insulting the minorities. Having an idea that they need representation that is looks like them because that's helping or make them feel powerful, feel accepted? Well moral of the story is "It doesn't matter what kind of ethnicity or race you are in because we are all human being!" What matter is the character and personalty of individual not the skin color.
As a person who is in minorities I beg you Medias, I don't need representation to be feel represented. I don't need character that just pretending to representing me. Remember what's important and what is the main priority.
And that is why Representation in Modern Media is insulting.
