What Jane Austen's Characters Would Drive

By Brie BoleynPublished 3 months ago Updated 3 months ago 4 min read

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a literary character in possession of a distinct personality, must be in want of a car. And so, in the spirit of modern matchmaking, I've traded in carriages for convertibles, estates for engines, and discovered which each Pride and Prejudice character would drive today- from Mr. Darcy's brooding luxury coupe to Lydia's questionable convertible choices.

>Fitzwilliam Darcy

He is elegant, powerful, old-money luxury. Not Flashy like a Ferrari, but still, every inch of him exudes refinement, class, and quiet dominance. He needs a car that says, "I don't need to prove anything- I simply am better." I've chosen for him, the Bentley Continental GT (black).

>Elizabeth Bennet

Elizabeth is smart, agile, independent, and maybe a little unconventional. But still, she is undeniably charming. She's not the biggest or most expensive on the road, but she handles every situation with wit and confidence. Plus, there's a bit of rebellion in choosing something practical and fun over showy status. For Lizzy, I've chosen a Mini Cooper Sport.

>Jane Bennet

Jane is graceful, kind, and balanced. Comfortable without being showy- everyone likes her instantly, and she never rubs refinement in your face. For the elegant Jane, I've chosen the Lexus RX Hybrid.

>Charles Bingley

Mr. Bingley is stylish, friendly, and generous- very well-bred, but approachable. He needs something that can go from the countryside to the city with ease. He needs the kind of car that's expensive yet somehow makes you feel comfortable around it. For him, I've picked a Range Rover Evoque.

>Mr. Wickham

Mr. Wickham is gorgeous, seductive, but utterly unreliable. He dazzles everyone on first sight but give it a few miles and you'll see the warning lights. Still, you can't quite resist taking it for a spin. For Wickham, I've chosen a Red Alfa Romeo Spider (vintage convertible)

>Mrs. Bennet

Do I need to say it? She is LOUD, attention grabbing, a bit over the top, but she thinks she's high society chic. Always honking her own horn about her daughter's prospects. She needs a Cadillac Escalade (with ALL the chrome trim).

>Mr. Bennet

Mr. Bennet is quietly classic, built to last, and has a bit of dry wit in design. He's the guy reading the manual while the rest of the family argues in the driveway. The Volve says, "I'm not here for the drama, I'm here for the peace and reliability." Mr. Bennet gets a Volvo V90 Wagon (preferably silver).

>Mr. Collins

Mr. Self-righteous about practicality and "moral" choices. He thinks he's making a statement about virtue, but he's mostly just making everyone uncomfortable. He tries to impress Lady Catherine by talking about fuel efficiency. Mr. Collins gets the Toyota Prius.

>Lady Catherine de Bourgh

Lady Catherine is massive, stately, imperious. She commands respect (and a little fear) wherever she goes. And she no doubt has someone else driving her around! For Lady Catherine, I've chosen a Rolls-Royce Phantom (silver, but really, I think any color suits her).

>Charlotte Lucas

Charlotte is sensible, reliable, and quietly smart. She knows what she's getting, and she's made peace with practicality over romance. It won't turn heads, but it'll never leave her stranded. Charlotte gets a Honda CR-V.

>Lydia Bennet

Lydia is loud, cute, and built entirely for attention. She's not the most sensible decision maker- or the safest, but she absolutely adores it. Wickham probably "borrowed" it once and forgot to fill the tank. Lydia gets a bright pink VW Convertible Beetle.

>Kitty Bennet

Kitty Bennet just wants what Lydia has- something fun, something fast, something with the top down. But with slightly better judgement than her sister (but not by much). Kitty gets a Mazda Miata (used, of course).

>Georgiana Darcy

Little Miss Darcy is elegant, understated, and quietly luxurious. She needs the kind of car that doesn't brag but turns heads anyway. She drives carefully, of course, but there's real warmth underneath the polished surface. For Georgiana, I've chosen the Audi A5 Cabriolet.

>Caroline Bingley

She is sleek, expensive, and engineered to be admired. She didn't buy her car to drive fast; she bought it to be seen driving it. Every line is polished, every curve is intentional. She parks it at just the right angle at every event, and you KNOW she revs it a little louder when Elizabeth pulls up in her mini cooper. For Caroline, I've chosen a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Coupe.

>Mary Bennet

Mary is earnest, serious, and practical to a fault. She values dependability and thinks flashy cars are morally suspect. You can practically hear her sermon about moderation when she starts it up. For Mary, I've chosen the Toyota Corolla (manual of course).

>Colonel Fitzwilliam

Rugged but Refined- he needs the kind of vehicle that looks equally at home in the countryside or parked outside a London club. He is practical, loyal, and quietly confident, and doesn't need flash or pedigree; he just wants something that works and lasts. For the colonel, I've chosen a Land Rover Defender.

>Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner

These two need the ultimate road-trip car. Something dependable, roomy, and subtly refined. They're the ones who show up with snacks, maps, and the wisdom that saves everyone's vacation. These two get a Subaru Outback.
